Peppermint Sugar Scrub 8

During the winter and cold months, a peppermint sugar scrub is the perfect solution for those dry, cracked hands. I love using a scrub on my hands this time of year especially because it leaves them feeling silky smooth and actually hydrated. Also as a nurse, I am constantly washing my hands it feels like which makes them drier. I am always looking for a way to treat the irritation from it and this is just perfect.

A sugar scrub is also a great DIY present for Christmas or any holiday but is really special when it has peppermint oil mixed in. This sugar scrub is inexpensive to make and so thoughtful because it is homemade. Another great plus is that you know exactly what is in it.

Just the mention of peppermint makes me excited for Christmas. I have peppermint lotion, candles, soap, candy, etc. this time of year because it just seems to make the season even more special. I may be silly but I truly find joy in the little things, even if it is peppermint.

I also just want to mention that by adding the coconut oil, you are getting an added bonus. We all know that there are a million benefits it seems like for coconut oil so what would be any better.

Ingredients:

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup coconut oil

Peppermint essential oil or extract

Ribbon and miniature candy cane- for decoration

Small glass jar

First melt the coconut oil in the microwave until it is liquid.

Combine the coconut oil with the sugar.

Depending on the consistency you would like, add a little more sugar or coconut oil until you are pleased. The picture below shows the consistency I like for mine.

Then add the peppermint essential oil starting with only a few drops because it is so fragrant and then stirring together. Smell the sugar scrub and then add more drops of the essential oil if you want a stronger fragrance.

*You can also use peppermint extract that is used for baking but the scent is not as strong and may require more drops of oil.

Once you are happy with the consistency and fragrance, spoon it into your favorite glass container or mason jar. Tie a ribbon or miniature candy cane around it for extra decoration. I have a small jar with a lid that is perfect to keep at the bathroom sink when I need it. Having a jar sitting on the sink in a guest bath would also be perfect for your guests.

Do keep in mind that the coconut will harden again after you have combined it with the sugar. I have a small spoon that stays in the bathroom to use to scoop it out.

The recipe above made just enough to fit inside my glass jar shown in the picture above.

If you are going to make some to give away, you could tie a ribbon around a glass jar with a Christmas tag and miniature candy cane so the recipient will know it is peppermint scented.

One more suggestion is to use on your feet if you have dry, cracked heels. Place some Vaseline on your feet afterwards and a cozy pair of socks just before going to bed and your feet will surely be silky smooth the next morning.

Pamper yourself this Christmas with a homemade peppermint sugar scrub that is sure to leave your skin silky smooth. Plus it is great for homemade gifts. Get the recipe at thesoutherncouture.com.
