In the last part of my brand new series, “All About the Bible Journaling,” we talked about how to overcome your fears when getting started. Make sure you check out Part 2 if you haven’t already. Getting started can be the hardest part if you are a perfectionist like myself. Once you overcome that fear, you can’t wait to dive in and get started with your very first entry. The only problem is that you end up not even knowing where to start. Let’s brainstorm some ideas together of places you can find inspiration so you can start this journey in no time.

How to Use Gelatos Using a Paintbrush and Water for Bible Journaling

Hand Lettering Books: I am not the best at hand lettering by no means. It is definitely one area that I need to work on and practice. I love seeing others who seem to write so flawlessly with the most gorgeous fonts. I have found a book that I have shared with y’all numerous times that deserves mentioning again. That is “100 Illustrated Bible Verses: Inspiring Words. Beautiful Art.” This book is full of scripture that is illustrated with different hand lettering techniques as well illustrations. It definitely gives you a guide to follow with style and choosing color until you feel more comfortable. There are also tons of other hand lettering books out there so just search around until you find something that you think will help you the most.

Where to Get Inspiration for Bible Journaling

Social Media: I know social media has a lot of flaws and hiccups with all the negativity, but why not find the good out there and use it for inspiration too. Social media is basically how I even learned about Bible journaling several years ago. I instantly fell in love and am so grateful for those first posts I saw that encouraged me to get started. I started searching Instagram hashtags constantly and following others who had gorgeous entries in their Bibles. (I would love to connect on Instagram with you as well. Come find me @the_southern_couture.)

Think Outside the Box: You do not have to illustrate just a single verse or passage of scripture. Most definitely think outside the box and look for inspiration in other places. I find that looking at weekly sermon notes and reviewing that sermon is a great place to start. I hear song lyrics on the radio all the time that I want to jot down or make a note in my phone so I can illustrate those later. Other times, I will illustrate a revelation that I feel the Lord is giving me so that I don’t forget it and can always look back on it. Bottom line is if something has spoke to your heart whether it is scripture or even a quote, it is most definitely worth taking the time to illustrate it in your Bible.

My Tip for You: One last tip I have for you is that when inspiration strikes, make sure you right down those thoughts right then if you can. I suggest keeping a running log on your phone in the notes section. Most of us always have a phone on us no matter where we are. I keep a small notepad in my purse as well. Now that you are more mindful and are going to have an eye out for inspiration, don’t be surprised at all the ideas that come flooding your mind. You definitely won’t want to forget them later.
