Back to school time will be here before we even know it so why not close out the summer with a bang for the kiddos to help them get excited. Throw an “Under the Big Top” Carnival party for the neighborhood kids. It’s the perfect way to celebrate with one more special event full of delicious snacks and fun games.

Under the Big Top Carnival Party

You may be thinking you don’t have enough time to throw another party with all the cooking and decorating, but have all that covered for you. It can be very simple, inexpensive, and delicious all at the same time.

Let’s talk food first. Children love snacks that are easy and quick to eat so that they can get back to playing right away. The other part about kids and food is that sometimes you have to get creative with sneaking those vegetables into their food too. This spread is exactly all those things into one and is also great to use for a dip. That brings me to a Cheddar BLT Spread.

Ingredients:

  • Kraft French Onion Dip 12 oz. container- You could also try using Kraft Green Onion Dip or Kraft Bacon and Cheddar Dip.
  • ½ cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 medium tomato diced
  • 4 slices crispy bacon
  • 2 green onions
  • Spinach- for garnish

*Be sure to leave enough tomato, bacon, and green onion for garnish as well.

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and stir together to combine.

Add tomato, bacon, green onion, and spinach to the top for garnish.

Spread the dip on different types of crackers and serve. Kids will love the finger foods and deliciousness of the creamy consistency while also enjoying those veggies.

Be sure to head to Wal-Mart where you can also find the newly packaged Kraft dips in French Onion, Green Onion, and Bacon and Cheddar. These Kraft dips are perfect for any party or occasion.

Now that the kiddos have enjoyed their vegetables in a scrumptious spread or dip, it’s time for them to enjoy something else salty and sweet. I can’t think of 2 better things than popcorn and cotton candy to enjoy at a carnival. Let’s get started with the decorations and show how the food is incorporated.

Start by first hanging red and white crepe paper streamers above where the food table will be. I found these “admit one” ticket stubs at the dollar store as well that worked perfectly to use as a banner. Hang a section of the tickets above the streamers. Blow up several bright colored balloons to hang on both sides of the streamers.

Under the Big Top Carnival Party

For the table, cover it with a red plastic tablecloth. For the front of the table, I cut sections out of red and white tissue paper for stripes to hang using tape. I added another roll of the tickets to the front of the table with a balloon on each end as well.

Under the Big Top Carnival Party

Place your Cheddar BLT spread made from Kraft French Onion Dip in the middle of the table with a platter of different crackers. I placed the dip in a bowl on the top of a red plastic storage bin from the dollar store that I turned upside down.Under the Big Top Carnival Party

On one side I placed the popcorn. This vintage style popcorn machine reminds me of stove top or campfire popcorn. Plus it just looks like something you would see at the carnival. I placed several popcorn containers around it so everyone could have their own or share if they wanted to.

Under the Big Top Carnival Party

To add a little more decoration, I made my own giant popcorn tub as well. All you need is a plastic storage bin. I found this red one at the dollar store. I bunched up sheets of white and yellow tissue paper and placed them inside for the popcorn. On the front of the tub, I used a yellow piece of scrapbook paper and placed black stickers on the front to spell “popcorn.” How cute and easy was that?!

Under the Big Top Carnival Party

We have had salty, but now we need something sweet. Cotton candy has always been one of my most favorite desserts. It seemed like I always had to have some when we went to a carnival, fair, circus, ball game, etc. when I was a child. (Let’s be honest. It’s pretty much still like that.)

Using my “vintage” looking cotton candy maker, I made my own cotton candy at home. I left some of the cotton candy on the wands.

Under the Big Top Carnival Party

I also placed several smaller servings in cupcake liners for younger children as well. I love how the cupcake liners can also be serving bowls.

Under the Big Top Carnival Party

To top off the table, tear off several of the ticket stubs and place them randomly throughout the table like giant confetti. The tickets could also be used for games at the party as well.

Which of the 3 newly packaged Kraft dips is your favorite? What creative ways do you use them when entertaining? I would love to know in the comments below. If you are looking for any suggestions or ideas, then be sure to click HERE.

Freshly Squeezed Lemonade Stand {+Printables} from thesoutherncouture.com

Imagine you are sitting in a rocking chair looking out at a beautiful view of the lake with the warm sun beating down on your face and a cool breeze blowing through your hair. The only thing you are missing now is a refreshing drink in your hair.

Cool off on a warm summer day with a refreshing glass of pink lemonade. Have yourself a lemonade bar for you and your friends with these fun printables. Check out all the details at thesoutherncouture.com.

Summertime brings back thoughts and memories as a child of late night slumber parties, dancing around outside catching lightning bugs, and a cold glass of lemonade on a hot summer day.

I even remember having my own lemonade stand as a child at my Mom’s yard sales. My Dad would help me mix the lemonade, and we would have a blast doing it together.

In order to bring back some of those fond memories, I decided a lemonade bar was a must for this year. As a Georgia peach, it seems as though the weather has suddenly turned from breezy and cool spring to scorching heat. Therefore a refreshing cold glass is absolutely necessary.

Freshly Squeezed Lemonade Stand {+Printables}
But a lemonade bar just couldn’t be complete by sitting out a jug of lemonade and a few glasses. At least not for me. When friends and family come over, I want a simple cold drink to be refreshing but also have a touch of “cuteness” at the same time.

When looking for cuteness, I therefore bring you Laura Kelly designs. I ran across these lemonade stand printables in her shop and just had to have them.

First I hung her lemonade banner printable above the bar with pink, green, and yellow bakers twine.

Freshly Squeezed Lemonade Stand {+Printables} from thesoutherncouture.com

Hanging on the front of the table is a “fresh squeezed” sign that was also hung with bakers twine. I loved using all 3 colors together to really make all of the colors in the sign pop too.

Freshly Squeezed Lemonade Stand {+Printables} from thesoutherncouture.com

To spruce up each paper straw is an adorable little lemon that I simply attached using a piece of tape on the back. Give the glasses that “cute factor” I mentioned earlier by placing the rim of the glasses in lemon juice and then dipping them in pink sugar sprinkles. So sparkly!

Freshly Squeezed Lemonade Stand {+Printables} from thesoutherncouture.com

I also was able to print a little sign that I attached to the pitcher for an extra touch. But as you have already noticed, my lemonade had to be pink too. The pink is really just my personality. Yellow lemonade is just so ordinary don’t you think?

Freshly Squeezed Lemonade Stand {+Printables} from thesoutherncouture.com

There is also a round lemonade sign that I placed on the front of the bowl that held the lemons in case I needed more.

To dress things up even more, I found this absolutely adorable towel with the same exact colors of the printable and little lemon slices on it too. It’s like it was meant to be. Add some lemon slices to your lemonade for an extra flair and you are all set.

Now head over to Laura Kelly Designs and get your printables too. Everything is so affordable, and her designs are so unique like nothing else I have ever seen. You will also find craft kits that are perfect for your kids this summer to keep them occupied. Who doesn’t love a craft kit delivered right to their front door?

We see so many different posts on Pinterest showing us what we can make to decorate for the next birthday party that we start to get overwhelmed sometime with all the planning and making and decorating. Who really has time to keep up with all that?

Decorate for any occasion without spending all the money and effort. This party garland using cupcake liners from thesouthencouture.com is perfect to make within minutes and for only dollars.

Well now you don’t have to anymore, because I have a simple, quick, and inexpensive decorating idea that you can use to decorate for just about any party from birthdays to wedding showers to baby showers and just about any other party you can think of.

All you have to do to change it up for the occasion is buy different cupcake liners. Cupcake liners can be found just about anywhere and even as inexpensive as just $1.00. I love finding different and cute designs too.

Your kids can also join in on the decorating fun by helping you make this garland. You only need 3 supplies to get you going:

Start by measuring the length you will need for the garland and cut your bakers twine accordingly being sure to leave a little extra in order to have room to hang it.

Fold cupcake liners in half and hole punch on fold to make an opening to string the bakers twine through.

Simple and Quick Party Garland Using Cupcake Liners from thesoutherncouture.com

*Don’t actually fold the cupcake liner in half making a crease but just enough to hole punch it.

String the cupcake liners on to the bakers twine through each hole. I used a specific pattern for this one but you don’t have to.

Simple and Quick Party Garland Using Cupcake Liners from thesoutherncouture.com

You could even turn the cupcake liners all in the same direction or facing each other as I did. I also used mini cupcake liners along with the standard size.

Hang your garland wherever you choose and even add a little ribbon at each end for an extra pop.

Simple and Quick Party Garland Using Cupcake Liners from thesoutherncouture.com

I love the way mine turned out for a birthday party. My cupcake liners have the cutest little cupcakes on the bottom of the larger ones with dots and stripes on the mini liners. All are Martha Stewart brand which you gotta love too.

Simple and Quick Party Garland Using Cupcake Liners from thesoutherncouture.com

I hung mine above the gift and party favor table. I just love all the bright colors. These would also be perfect to hang above the food and dessert table after all they are cupcake liners.

See…your party decorations don’t have to be anything complicated, time consuming, or expensive. You can make this banner in a matter of minutes for only a few dollars easily.

Change the cupcake liners and voila…you have yourself a new decoration for every occasion.

Enjoy the little things in life and celebrate every occasion no matter how small it may seem.

Cinco de Mayo Party {DIY Decorations and Recipes}

I absolutely love this time of year. Yesterday was my anniversary to my wonderful husband and next week will also be his birthday. It’s just so much fun to celebrate. Well Cinco de Mayo is also next week too which holds a special place in my heart because we went on our honeymoon to Riviera Maya.

Your Cinco de Mayo party is planned and all taken care of with these budget friendly decorations and recipes. At thesoutherncouture.com all you need to do is take some notes because you will be all covered.

Having a Cinco de Mayo party is the perfect way to celebrate and remember those memories even if we aren’t sitting on the beach soaking up the sun. This is the next best thing celebrating with my husband.

Cinco de Mayo Party {DIY Decorations and Recipes}

To decorate I first made tissue paper flags to hang around the table. They are easy to make and add so much fun color.

Cinco de Mayo Party {DIY Decorations and Recipes}

I strung up crepe paper banners that were easy to design cutting shapes and punching holes with a hole puncher above the food.

Cinco de Mayo Party {DIY Decorations and Recipes}

The centerpiece of artwork hanging above the food table is a foam wreath I found at the Dollar Tree that I decorated using tissue paper flowers. You can find the directions for the flowers below. I attached different colors and designs of ribbon at the bottom and the flowers with straight pins.

For a centerpiece on the table, I made sombreros from clay pots and clay trays. I just love the little extra touch that the pom poms give too.

Add copies of the Mexico flags throughout the decorations for an extra touch as well.

You may recall seeing my yarn carrots that I made for Easter with empty spools. I did the same thing for this party to make chili peppers. You can find the full tutorial with a video to make them HERE.

Cinco de Mayo Party {DIY Decorations and Recipes}

Now let’s talk food. Make yourself a taco bar using ingredients from my blackened tilapia taco with avocado cream sauce recipe that I shared a few weeks ago. You can also make them using chicken and they are just as fabulous.

Cinco de Mayo Party {DIY Decorations and Recipes}

Blackened Tilapia Tacos with Avocado Cream Sauce

Make a simple salsa with chips using diced tomatoes, diced onion, cilantro, lime juice, and salt. I could snack on this stuff for hours. Plus it is so much better than what you buy in the jar in stores because you know exactly what goes in it.

Cinco de Mayo Party {DIY Decorations and Recipes}

The bowl that I am serving the chips in was a beautiful piece of pottery handmade in Mexico. I leave it on my kitchen table all the time. I think all the painted colors are so beautiful.

For a drink station, I bought these cactus glasses at the Dollar Tree and dipped the rims in water and then in yellow sugar sprinkles. Use ginger ale or something similar for a family friendly version.

Now you may be thinking where dessert is, but I haven’t left you hanging there. Earlier this week I showed you how to make a Tres Leches cake. Find the recipe HERE. It is so yummy, and isn’t hard to make at all. It really is easier than you think and can be made in 3 different parts.

Scrapbook-2 Featured Images

Scrapbook 2

I am a little sad to say that this is the last part of a 5 part series for Mark’s 30th 80’s themed party! I had so much fun planning it and making everything. There were definitely memories made that will last us a lifetime and more. Please be sure thought to check out Part 1 with the general overview of the party, Part 2 for a DIY 80’s sign and birthday banners, Part 3 for a “lit up” CANDY sign and Pac Man sign, and then also Part 4 where I show you how to make a giant Rubik’s cube, a cupcake stand decorated with neon cassette tapes, and even a serving bowl made from an actual record. Sounds like fun in high gear to me!

But in order to wrap up this party and make it complete, you have to have games and presents or let’s face it, it wouldn’t be much of a party.

For the first game, I placed sour patch kids candy into a mason jar while counting them. Be sure to keep the number in a safe place. You would hate to have to take them all out and recount. As guests would arrive for the party, I had them place their guess by writing it down a notepad and placing it in a bowl. Make sure they write their name on it too, or you won’t know who wins the prize. Whoever comes the closest can either win the jar of candy or have some kind of different prize. I had a Wal-Mart gift card for the 1st place winner and a large box of 80’s themed candy that I found at Cracker Barrel.

Trivia is always a fun game at parties but especially when it’s an 80’s themed trivia game to test those 80’s baby’s knowledge. I had 10 questions and then a bonus question in case of a tie. Hand out index cards and ink pens to everyone to write down their answers. Below is a list of the questions and answers all written out for you to use for your party.

80’s Themed Party Trivia:

Question #1: What soda had six times the caffeine of any other soda on the market?

Answer #1: Jolt

Question #2: On “Family Ties,” what president’s picture did Alex Keaton keep on his nightstand?

Answer #2: Richard Nixon

Question #3: What 1984-1986 game show featured the “whammy?”

Answer #3: Press Your Luck

Question #4: Who was the TV action star of the 80’s that had a pop album in 1986 entitled “Heartbeat?”

  1. Bruce Willis
  2. Edward Woodward
  3. Ken Wahl
  4. Don Johnson

Answer #4: Don Johnson

Question #5: Which of the following games was NOT produced by Atari?

  1. Pac-Man
  2. All Star Race Wars
  3. Pong
  4. Centipde

Answer #5: All Star Race Wars

Question #6: What feminine garment was first advertised using live models on television in 1987?

  1. Underwear
  2. Girdles
  3. Bras
  4. Slips

Answer #6: Bras

Question #7: “I feel the need, the need for speed” is a popular line from which film from 1986?

Answer #7: Top Gun

Question #8: Which championship pro football team had a rap music hit in the mid-80’s with “The Super Bowl Shuffle?”

Answer #8: Chicago Bears

Question #9: What was E.T.’s favorite kind of candy?

Answer #9: Reese’s Pieces

Question #10: What was the name of the musician that had hits with “Footloose,” “Danger Zone,” and “I’m All Right?”

  1. Kenny Loggins
  2. Phil Sommers
  3. Dan Hartman
  4. Mike Hanson

Answer #10: Kenny Loggins

Tie Breaker Question: Which popular 1980’s group had a hit with “Careless Whisper?”

Tie Breaker Answer: Wham

Again I had a Wal-Mart gift card for the 1st place winner and an 80’s themed candy also from Cracker Barrel for the 2nd place winner. And because I can be a perfectionist at times, I even had a number that I typed into notepad on my phone before the party in case of a tie and needing another tie breaker. You gotta cover all your bases right?

Once the games are over, it’s time for the birthday boy to enjoy opening his presents. One of Mark’s favorite birthday presents was a scrapbook from everyone at the party. I had everyone attending the party write Mark a letter telling him what he meant to them, sharing a fun memory they may have had with him, etc. I then included a picture for those who wanted to as well. It does take some time to prepare for this so try to give yourself and guests several weeks in advance to prepare in order to collect the letters and then to put it all together.

All you will need is:

Scrapbook

Scrapbook paper

Adhesive runner/scrapbook mounting squares

Pictures from guests

Letters from guests

Adhesive foam dots

Stickers/Scrapbook décor

Scrapbook 1

Mark did tell me after the party that it was one of his favorite presents and something he would cherish forever. We still enjoy getting the scrapbook out and reading through all the letters remembering everyone’s kind words. Just be sure to have your box of tissues nearby.

For Mark’s other presents that I gave him, I did give him some smaller things the night of the party so he would have something from me to open as well that night. For his biggest and most expensive gift, I waited until his actual birthday. I thought why not continue with the 80’s theme and make things interesting. I have done scavenger hunts in the past for Mark for certain holidays, and he really seems to enjoy them. Therefore I created an 80’s Themed Scavenger Hunt with clues centered around 80’s movies, games, etc.

You will need:

Neon paper- neon is best to keep with the theme of the 80’s

Tape

Markers

Below I have listed the clues and suggestions of where to hide them to make it easier for you. Hide the first clue in an envelope and give as a birthday card to get the games started then the hunting can begin.

Clue #1: Craving some Reese Pieces? Where would E.T. go to find some? Look there for your next clue.

Hide clue #2 in the cupboard or somewhere he would find candy in your house.

Clue #2: If I were a Ghostbuster, where is the first place I would look to capture a ghost (or perhaps a squirrel)?

Hide clue #3 in the garage or basement of your house.

Clue #3: Who needs an Xbox or PlayStation? Where would you find these or better yet an Atari?

Hide clue #4 with your game consoles or actual video games.

Clue #4: In order for Ferris Bueller to have a day off, what is the first thing he needed to get away?

Hide clue #5 on your car.

Clue #5: The popular 1980’s movie “Sixteen Candles” could not be complete without the candles of course.

Hide clue #6 on a candle in your house or where you store birthday candles.

Clue #6: If Tom Cruise lived here and needed to park his plane after a long day of working on “Top Gun,” where would that be?

Clue #6 should lead to the present(s) hid in the garage. Just be sure that when you hide clue #3 in your garage that you keep the two separate so he doesn’t find the presents first. Our garage is detached and large enough that I was able to hide his presents in a back corner and the previous clue was more obvious so it was easier for him to find. I hid clue in the house, outside on the car, and in the garage to keep him walking and searching. That’s the fun in a scavenger hunt.

In the pictures below you will see a paper tab on the clues. I wrote where to hide each clue on the tab to make it easier when hiding them later and then peeled the tab off once hiding them.

Scavenger Hunt 1

Scavenger Hunt 2

The party may be over now and the presents all unwrapped, but now it is time to enjoy those gifts! Plus let’s be thankful for another year of life that God has blessed us each with.

I hope you have enjoyed this 80’s party series and find it helpful when planning your next party. Please share with me your party pictures and ideas. I would love to see them.

Enjoy your party and gift giving. And always enjoy the little things in life!

Totally Radical 80s Themed Party Part 4

No 80’s party is complete without a giant rubik’s cube, an 80’s themed cupcake stand with cassette tapes, and serving bowls made from records. What makes all of these so cool is that you can make them all yourself and for much cheaper than what you would pay in the store for 80’s party décor. Be sure to also check out more of Mark’s Totally Radical 80’s Themed Party Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 if you have not already.

Decorate for your 80's party with a homemade giant rubik's cube, a neon cassette tape cupcake stand, and even serving bowls made from records. You can find all detailed and simple instructions at thesoutherncouture.com.

We all can remember playing with rubik’s cubes as kids and most of us probably becoming frustrated when we couldn’t figure it out. Well this is one rubik’s cube that is easy to make and will bring much more pleasure and satisfaction when displayed at your party. Parties for Pennies really hit this idea spot on and I couldn’t wait to make it when I found her idea.

When planning Mark’s party, I also wanted some way to display the dessert instead of just using any old ordinary cake stand. I decided on doing cupcakes but actually didn’t have my own cupcake stand anyways. When I found a cupcake stand that I could make myself using cassette tapes from Parties for Pennies, again I couldn’t wait!

And as if a giant rubik’s cube and cupcake stand with cassette tapes wasn’t enough, I found serving bowls made from records. This was just the icing on the cake.

Let’s not waste any time. These are some pretty awesome décor items that are a blast to make as well. I will first start with the giant Rubik’s cube.

Supplies you will need:

  • 1 large box or smaller boxes of the same size that will form a cube when taped together
  • Package tape
  • Black spray paint
  • Black craft paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Neon colored paper- You will need 5 different colors.
  • Ruler
  • Paper cutter/trimmer
  • Adhesive runner or Hot glue gun

First you will need a large box. If you do not have one large box, then you can use package tape to tape several small boxes together in order to make a large cube. I simply held the boxes tightly together while wrapping the package tape enough to keep them secure.

Rubiks Cube 1

Spray paint your box black to coat completely. I decided to end up painting a 2nd coat on the box with craft paint. The craft paint seemed to make a thicker coat that covered the box completely and to cover up any writing on the box. The craft paint seemed easier to me personally than having to keep spray painting to cover the writing especially.

While your paint is drying, you can go ahead and cut out your neon colored paper for the squares of the cube. You are going to need 5 different colors in order to have one color for each side of the cube. You will not need a color for the bottom since it will be on the floor and no one will see it. You will end up with a total of 9 squares of each color for a grand total of 45 squares. I found a pack of paper at Wal-Mart that had neon green, blue, pink, yellow, and orange that worked perfectly.

The size of your individual squares that you need to cut out will depend on the size of your box. I measured the length of one side and also considered that I needed to leave a black border around the box and then between each colored square.

Once you have your squares measured and cut out and the box is completely dry, you are ready to attach your colored squares to the box. I choose to place one color on each side of the box. You could also mix it up like a rubik’s cube that has been played with all the colors mixed up.

I used an adhesive runner to apply the squares but would have used a hot glue gun if making again. The adhesive runner did not seem to want to adhere well to the paint on the box.

Your giant rubik’s cube is now complete and was not hard to make at all. Plus as I said earlier, it is definitely much cheaper to make than the typical store bought items. I used mine as a table to place Mark’s gifts on at the party.

Totally Radical 80s Themed Party Part 4

I am very excited now to get to the cupcake stand. You cannot have an 80’s party without using cassette tapes and this just displays them perfectly.

Cassette Tape Cupcake Display

Cupcake Stand 7

Supplies:

  • 2 different sized boxes that can be stacked in two tiers with space enough to stack the cupcakes on each layer- I used only 2 boxes but if you need more space for cupcakes, then use more boxes of course to have more tiers.
  • Cassette tapes
  • Black spray paint
  • Neon colored spray paint- I used neon pink and green to alternate the colors.
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Package tape

I layed out my boxes and cassette tapes for a display to have an idea of how many cassette tapes I would need and how many of each color I would need to paint. My dad happened to have some cassette tapes that he no longer wanted. I also found a book on tape at Goodwill that was very cheap and gave me the majority of the tapes I needed in that one set.

Spray paint your cassette tapes with the neon spray paint. I did have to paint 2 coats in order to cover the writing on the tapes completely.

Cupcake Stand 2

Cupcake Stand 3

While your tapes are drying, you can assemble your boxes. Always thinking of the most efficient way to make the most of my time. I first taped the boxes shut with packages tape and then stacked in two tiers. Using a hot glue gun, glue your boxes together. I added extra hot glue around the edges of one box where it sits on the next almost like caulking something added extra support.

Paint your boxes black with spray paint until covered completely.

Cupcake Stand 4

Once your tapes are completely dry, hot glue them to the boxes on the sides in the pattern you choose.

Cupcake Stand 5

Cupcake Stand 6

Your cupcake stand is now complete and ready to show off those neon cassette tapes that you thought you would never ever use again. What a neat way to show off the dessert.

Cassette Tape Cupcake Display

Cupcake Stand 1

Now that you have something to display your cupcakes, you need something extra special for a serving bowl than just using that huge chip bowl you always pull out at parties. You know the one I’m talking about. We all do it. But this time, an 80’s party deserves something extra special to serve those cheddar cheese Doritos in. Why yes, a record bowl is the perfect solution to add another extra 80’s flair.

Totally Radical 80s Themed Party Part 4

Supplies:

  • Records- I found mine for really cheap at Goodwill. Pick records that have colorful labels that will show through once the bowl starts becoming empty.
  • Oven safe bowl
  • Baking sheet
  • Oven
  • Pot holders

Preheat your oven to 200 degrees F.

Place the oven safe bowl on a baking sheet upside down.

Place your record directly on top of the bowl being sure to center it so when it begins to melt, it will fall evenly around the bowl.

Record Bowls 2

Once the oven is preheated, place the baking sheet in the oven with the bowl and record for about 8-10 minutes.

You will start to see the record “melt” as it gets hotter. The record will begin to fall down around the ball and conform to it. Using a pot holder or mitten, press on the record to check that it has softened enough in order to mold it the way you want.

Record Bowls 3

Once the record has conformed to the bowl, take the baking sheet out of the oven with a pot holder and immediately take the record of the bowl. Quickly turn your bowl over and place the record inside. Mold your record using the bowl as a guide being careful to not burn yourself during this part.

Record Bowls 4

You do have to work quickly once taking the record out of the oven because as it begins to cool down, the record will harden once again. You can place the record back in the oven as previously done if it hardens too quickly and you would like to reshape some.

I also melted the smaller size records around a small bowl which basically only curled the edges of the record. It still turned out really cute, and I ended up using it as a cake plate for a small cake I made for the cake topper.

Totally Radical 80s Themed Party Part 4

The record bowls were perfect for serving Doritos and any other snacks but also great for the candy bar. I did clean the records with a wet paper towel before placing food in them but if you do not feel comfortable with putting food in them then just line with a napkin or towel first.

Totally Radical 80s Themed Party Part 4

These three projects were by far my most favorite of all of Mark’s party décor. They were different than anything I had ever made before and really embraced the 80’s theme showing it off even more. Everyone loved them at the party and kept talking about them. You will not regret these projects one bit. Don’t even think about having a party without incorporating rubik’s cubes, cassette tapes, and records. There simply just isn’t any other way.

Totally Radical 80's Themed Party Part 3

I am very excited to be sharing more of Mark’s Totally Radical 80’s Themed Party. Before continuing if you have not read Part 1 and Part 2 then be sure to check those out as well with lots of other fun ideas.

Make decorations for your 80's party without spending the money for the store bought stuff. Have your own 80's themed candy bar and Pac Man decorations with the full instructions at thesoutherncouture.com/

Today though I am going to share with you some more of the specific décor and how you can make it yourself as well for very little money. I was amazed when looking for 80’s décor in local party shops and how much it really did cost. I thought this is crazy. I can totally make my own for much cheaper. And who doesn’t love to save some money?

I loved the candy bar at the party with guests having a bag that they could fill with their favorite candies they enjoyed as a child to take home with them.

Above the candy bar, I needed something just as cute for the décor. I found an adorable CANDY sign at Parties for Pennies that I could not resist. The way the neon dots are placed against the hot pink makes it seem as though it was actually lit up.

The piece of décor I chose was to incorporate Pac Man. Many children have great memories of playing Pac Man with their friends and having such a good time. This Pac Man turned out absolutely perfect and was a favorite of most guests. It was also definitely much cheaper and much cuter than most décor found at the store.

Let’s begin with the CANDY sign.

You will need:

  • Neon pink poster board
  • Neon yellow paper or yellow dot stickers
  • Cricut- If available. If not see below for alternate option.
  • Adhesive runner or glue dots

To begin with, select your letters and change settings to the size of the letters you desire. Load your pink poster board onto your mat and load into the Cricut.

Candy Sign 2

If needing more help with Cricut settings and how to cut your poster board, check out Part 2 where it gives more detailed instructions with cutting out the letters for the birthday banners.

Now start cutting with the Cricut and let the magic begin.

Candy Sign 3

Once it is finished, remove your mat and carefully remove the letters.

If you do not have a Cricut, then you could always print letters in the font you choose from your computer and then cut them out. Trace them onto the pink poster board and then cut them out. The Cricut just makes it much easier with cleaner lines.

You now need the yellow dots to place in the middle of the letters that will give the appearance of the letters being lit up. I used my Cricut to cut out the circles on neon yellow paper but there is a much easier way.

Using yellow dot stickers that you can normally find at the dollar store, place them in the center of the letters and stick them on. I would definitely do this option if making again. It would save some time for sure.

But if you choose to use the Cricut, place your neon yellow paper on the Cricut mat.  Select a circle and then duplicate so that multiple circles will be cut out at once in the size you choose. Load your mat into the Cricut and begin the cutting. Once finished cutting, remove the mat and then the circles.

Candy Sign 4

Using an adhesive runner or glue dots, place them on the back of the circles and then press down on the center of the letters lining them up.

Candy Sign 5

Your CANDY sign is now complete and ready to be hung up so the “lights” can shine and sparkle above your sweet candy bar.

Candy Sign

But no 80’s party is complete without some sort of Pac Man décor. I cannot decide which I liked better, the CANDY sign or the Pac Man sign.

Pac Man has to be just adorable and again much cheaper to make but just as easy and fun than the boring store bought décor.

Supplies:

  • Neon yellow poster board
  • Neon pink poster board
  • White paper
  • Black paper
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Glue or adhesive runner
  • Circle 3” paper punch
  • Oval 2” paper punch
  • Pac Man ghost clip art

Pac Man 2

First of all, measure a circle with a diameter of 16”. Mark points around the circle 8” from the center to help with cutting out the circle. Once you feel you have enough marks, then cut out your circle.

Pac Man 3

Cut out a triangle on the right side of the circle by measuring about 8” on the outside of the right side and then measuring inward 8” to the center.

Your circle should now look like the actual Pac Man. Where the triangle is cut out, is where the Pac Man’s mouth is open ready to eat the dots.

Pac Man 4

Using the circle paper punch, cut out 3 circles with neon yellow poster board which will be the dots that Pac Man “eats” in the game. My circle paper punch was a 3” size.

Pac Man 5

Pac Man 6

Now find a Pac Man game ghost image by doing an image search online. I printed one out that I liked and traced it on pink poster board.

Pac Man 7

Then cut it out of the poster board.

Pac Man 8

Your ghost is going to need eyes of course so using your oval paper punch, punch out 2 white ovals. Then glue the ovals onto the pink ghost where you want the eyes positioned. Now you need 2 black circle for the center of the eyes. Your circles should measure about 1”. I used a spool of thread and traced around the outside of the bottom of the spool onto black paper and then cut out. Glue your black circles onto the white ovals. You now have the Pac Man ghost completed.

Pac Man 9

After you have made enough ghost, dots, and the Pac Man, you can hang them in the pattern you desire. The Pac Man sign really added that something extra to the dessert and candy table.

Overall Decor 1

Totally Radical 80s Themed Party Part 2

First if you haven’t read Part 1, be sure to check it out as well as it has an overview of the entire party!

Host and decorate your own 80's party on a budget with homemade party decorations that are sure to be totally radical. Get all the details at thesoutherncouture.com.

The first thing your guests need to see on the front door when they arrive is a large 80’s sign welcoming them inside. (Let me first say that if you have not read the Totally Radical 80’s Party, check it out as well for a full description of the entire 80’s themed party.)

Bring the decorations outside and give the guests something fun to look at when they arrive as they anticipate what the decorations inside will be like. Your front door décor is always a hint or sneak peak of the fun that is awaiting them just inside.

I first covered the door with a black tablecloth that I first splatter painted with neon paint and large paintbrushes. Man I forgot how much fun it was to just sling paint all over the place and not worry about a mess. I have to say though there wasn’t as much paint on me at the end as I thought there would be. I did find tiny paint specks here and there on me for the next few days even after taking a shower.

I wanted a sign that would represent the theme so why not keep it simple and just have “80’s” hanging on the door which is exactly what I did.

What you will need:

  • Bright pink and yellow poster board- any neon color poster board will be great since neon colors were so popular in the 80’s.
  • Cricut Expression 2- If you have a Cricut it does make part of this easier. If not you do not have to have one.
  • Cricut Alphabet cartridge- or any font cartridge should work
  • Cricut mat
  • Cricut tools
  • Glue or adhesive

80's Sign 14

I will show you step-by-step directions using the Cricut Expression 2. If you do not have a Cricut, you should still be able to create the same sign by tracing the numbers or cutting them out free hand, but the Cricut does make it easier and also a cleaner cut.

Cut out the pink poster board, or the color of your choice, and stick to the Cricut loading mat. I cut a piece that measured 8”x12” which was the size of my mat so I could get the numbers I want cut to be the largest possible.

Once turning your Cricut machine on, insert the Cricut Alphabet cartridge or any other font cartridge into the machine. Select the “8″.

80's Sign 2

Then click the home button in the bottom right hand corner and you will see the screen pictured below.

80's Sign 3

Click the wrench icon for settings and then click the “ABC” icon that has arrows above and below it which mean to “fit to page.” The “8” will now fit the entire size of the mat to get the largest cut out possible.

80's Sign 4

Place the mat into the Cricut and click home.

Click the load icon which is a printer with an arrow pointing to the right. Your mat should load into the Cricut.

Click the cutting settings icon which is a blade with stars and adjust the settings depending on your specific paper. I selected the cutting options of Heavy paperOriginal blade-6, Settings– 5-5-1. Check also to make sure that the actual blade in the Cricut is dialed to 6 or whatever your original blade setting is set to.

80's Sign 5

Now you are ready to begin cutting. Select the cut or blade icon. Your machine should now start cutting.

80's Sign 10

Once your cutting is complete and the machine has stopped, unload your mat by clicking the unload icon and remove the “8” with a Cricut spatula.

80's Sign 6

Do the same above steps to cut out a “0.”

You now need an “s” to make the “80’s” sign complete. I used the “s” that is in the middle of a circle. This cut out is available on the Cricut alphabet cartridge.

80's Sign 7

Select the letter and then click on the letter to show the pencil icon and select the pencil for more options. Now click the first icon that is a box with an arrow pointing diagonally out.

80's Sign 8

This icon will allow you to change the size of the letter. Change the measurement to 4.00.

80's Sign 9

Click save and then it will prompt you to click save again. Then click home to return to home screen and begin cutting.

Again load your paper, check your cutting settings, check your blade, and then begin cutting the image using the above steps used to cut out the “8.” Once it is done cutting, unload the mat and remove the cut out from the mat.

You are now finished using the Cricut. Be sure to replace the plastic cover on your mat to protect its surface.

Lay your cut outs on the yellow poster board and arrange them how you would like. Once you have the lay out the way you would like, attach your numbers and letters using glue or any other adhesive.

80's Sign 11

Cut out the yellow poster board around your saying leaving a border. I decided to cut different size triangles around the border giving a zig-zag pattern that really added that extra 80’s touch.

80's Sign 12

Next I hung mine on my door as guests arrived for a sneak peek of the rest of the party. I also had a black plastic tablecloth hanging as a backdrop on the door that had been splattered with neon spray paint.

Totally Radical 80s Themed Party Part 2

Another party decoration that I made was two different birthday banners.

Totally Radical 80s Themed Party Part 2

I remember as a child always seeing the “Happy Birthday” banners hanging up and thought why not just make one that uses neon colors? I hung one behind the food tables and one on the mantle in my living room above the presents.

You will need:

  • Neon yellow and pink poster board
  • Ruler
  • Neon green ribbon
  • Adhesive runner or glue
  • Cricut
  • Cricut Alphabet cartridge
  • Neon starbursts: These are a pack of neon colored cut-outs that were in a pack at my local dollar store, and the pack called them starbursts. I immediately thought of the candy but maybe that’s just me. You can also see the  leftover starbursts I had hanging in the picture below under the birthday banner.

Banner 2

Before you begin, you must decide what phrase you would like to use for your banner. Of course something birthday related if it is a birthday party but if throwing an 80’s party for Halloween then any “totally radical” 80’s phrase would be perfect.

I chose for one banner to say “Happy 30th Birthday” which I divided up into two separate banners. The other banner read “Luv the 80’s” that I left on only one banner due to the phrase being shorter.

First using your ruler, measure the individual flag and mark accordingly to how large you want it to be on your poster board. The bottom side of the flag (or actually the top of the flag that will attach to your ribbon) for me was 6 inches and 7.5 inches on the other two sides.

Cut out one flag and use it to trace out the rest of your flags. My first phrase requires 15 flags and the other needed 9 flags.

Using my Cricut and the Alphabet cartridge, I cut out my letters and numbers on the opposite color of poster board that I used for the actual flag so it would show up. See above for directions for using the Cricut if needed to cut out your letters.

Banner 3

You could also use sticker letters or any other kind of letters usually found in scrapbooking supplies at your craft store. I chose to use poster board and the Cricut because I wanted the neon colored letters which can sometimes be hard to find. Plus I could make them whatever size I wanted.

Using your adhesive runner or some type of glue, attach each letter to a starburst if you have them.

Banner 4

If not then attach the letter directly to the flag. You could also cut out your own starbursts using poster board and the same technique I used for the zig-zag pattern on the 80’s sign above.

If you choose to use the starbursts, then you will need to attach each starburst to a separate flag of course.

Now you are ready to attach your flags to the neon ribbon so you can hang it up. I chose a neon green ribbon that would really pop off of the neon yellow and pink once hung up.

Leave about 4-5 inches of ribbon on each end of your banner in order to be able to hang it up. I placed a dot of hot glue on each top corner of my flag and then layed the ribbon on top of the flag and pressed down. Be careful if using hot glue gun with the ribbon. The glue will sometimes come through the ribbon easily depending on the kind you use and can burn you.

Banner 5

Continue gluing your flags to the ribbon leave a small space between each flag. Once all your flags are attached, do not forget to leave another 4-5 inches of ribbon on the end to hang your banner.

You now have your own birthday or party banner ready to hang and celebrate the special occasion. What’s a party without a birthday banner?

Totally Radical 80s Themed Party Part 2

Look forward to more about this special 80’s party for my husband and how much it meant to me to be able to do it. I will have more post coming describing other DIY décor pieces. Enjoy yourself at your party, but don’t forget to enjoy the little things in life too!

Also if you have not already, please join me on Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, and Twitter. I would love to hear from you with any comments, suggestions, or ideas you may have.

Let’s get ready to throw a totally radical 80’s themed party! Who doesn’t love a good party with family, friends, good food, games, and music all centered around the 1980s?

Throw an 80's party on a budget. Thesoutherncouture.com gives you ideas for decorations, food, attire, games, and much more.

My husband celebrated his 30th birthday earlier this year. I thought about themes for his surprise party for weeks and wasn’t satisfied until I came up with an 80’s party theme. I absolutely love how everything turned out from the décor to the music and even to our fashion. This party was probably the most fun I have ever had when having guests over. Mark was totally surprised and even a little shocked when seeing how all the guests were dressed.

I found several ideas of 80’s party décor from Parties for Pennies along with some of my own. I must confess too that me and Mark loved the décor so much that I left it up for another week or two so we could enjoy it some more.

I am going to give you an overview of the party in this part one with more details and pictures to come so you can create your own 80s themed party. All the details will be here in one place making your party planning even easier. Look no further.

Well let’s get started with a tour of the party so you can feel as if you were there yourself.

When guests first arrived, they were met at the door with a bright 80’s sign and neon paint splattered backdrop.

Totally Radical 80s Themed Party Part 2

Once entering the party you are immediately met with the outrageous sounds of all your favorite 80s songs. My brother-in-law is a DJ and played everyone’s favorite tunes throughout the night. This was a huge help with so many other things to do that night. But if you do not want to hire your own DJ, download your favorite 80s songs and have a special playlist. My TV also had an 80’s music channel that I could have used as well.

The food tables were the first thing you saw when entering so I wanted a backdrop and décor that would really pop and grab everyone’s attention. I bought black plastic tablecloths that I found at Wal-Mart for $1 (or you could also find at your local dollar store). I used neon paint and large paintbrush to splatter paint the tablecloths.

Backdrop 1

Totally Radical 80s Themed Party Part 1

Using the splatter paint tablecloths was also a great idea for making an 80’s photo booth and taking pictures with your glowing 80’s fashion.

Totally Radical 80s Themed Party Part 2

Hanging on the backdrop in the middle was a birthday banner that read “Happy 30th Birthday.”

I also hung a banner on the mantle of my fireplace above Mark’s presents that said “Luv the 80’s.”

Totally Radical 80s Themed Party Part 2

Hanging below the birthday banner were some neon cut-outs that I found at the dollar store. The package they came in actually called them starbursts. I love the zig-zag pattern around the edges of them that really added an extra touch without taking away from the banner.

For the menu, I went simple and made frozen pizzas. I cannot remember one party as a kid that did not include pizza. Plus who doesn’t love pizza after all? Nacho cheese Doritos were also a favorite snack food in the 80’s. I remember many times opening my lunch at school and having Doritos packed or snacking on them when first getting home from school. In order to keep the Doritos going, I had cheese balls that were covered in crushed Doritos. When doing more research online, I also read that pasta salad recipes were a favorite in the 80’s. There were also sausage balls to snack on as well mostly because Mark really likes them, not really because they have anything to do with the 80’s. Another fun addition to the food was Capri Sun for the kids. I personally remember loving the idea of having to punch a straw in the side and squeezing it as I took every sip.

Now that your plate is almost full, don’t forget to leave room for dessert which brings me to the dessert and candy bar.

Overall Decor 1

Hanging above the cupcakes and candy bar was a “CANDY” sign that I made using my Cricut to cut out the letters and dots out of neon colored posterboard that was also bought at the dollar store. You just have to love the dollar store.

Totally Radical 80's Themed Party Part 3

Below the “CANDY” sign, was a Pac Man display. Everyone loved the Pac Man and all the fun memories they had playing it when they were younger. I must say this was one of my favorite pieces of décor at the party.

Totally Radical 80's Themed Party Part 3

Totally Radical 80's Themed Party Part 3

Another addition to the décor were paper streamers that I made from my neon posterboard scraps from other projects. I cut out random shapes including triangles and nothing that was perfect. The more irregular and odd the shapes were the better it matched with the theme and décor. Then sew them together and you can hang up a paper streamer. Check out this Easter Egg Paper Garland that will show you exactly how to sew together.

I found a wonderful tutorial for the bowls I could use that went great with the 80’s theme. On the candy bar and also the food tables, I placed candy and Doritos inside bowls made from records. The record bowls were easy to make and absolutely adorable. Plus I found some records at Goodwill that were inexpensive with colorful labels that matched perfectly.

Totally Radical 80s Themed Party Part 4

Totally Radical 80s Themed Party Part 4

Every party must have a cake! I made chocolate cupcakes with a light and fluffy chocolate fudge icing because chocolate is Mark’s favorite. I also made him a 6 inch in diameter cake topper. For decoration on top of the cupcakes and cake topper, I sprinkled nerds on top. Nerds were a very favorite candy back in the day and the bright colors really popped on the chocolate fudge icing. I used cupcake liners that were a mix of bright colors that I found at the dollar store. I made a small paper banner with posterboard sewn together with skewers to place in the cake. On the paper flags I placed scrapbook stickers that spelled out “30th.”

Overall Decor 4

Because these cupcakes were so cute with the nerds and all, they could not just be sitting on the table but needed to be displayed in a special way which brings me to the cupcake stand. Another favorite of mine. By gluing a couple of differing sizes of boxed together and spray painting black, you have the beginning of a cupcake stand. This basic concept could be used for any occasion or party with some extra decoration depending on your theme. I spray painted cassette tapes with neon spray paint and glued them around the sides of the boxes. Also don’t forget your neon birthday candles! Man 30 is a lot of candles! (I have to tease Mark about his age. Lol.)

Totally Radical 80s Themed Party Part 4

Cupcake Stand 1

Cupcake Stand 7

For my candy bar, I chose a variety of candy with many kinds that were popular in the 80’s and many others that were just yummy and sweet that everyone could enjoy. The candy included Sour Patch Kids, Twizzlers, candy necklaces, candy bracelets, Nerds, Laffy Taffy, Air Heads, gum balls, Fun Dip, Sixlets, and much more. Be sure to have candy bags available so your guests can take with them candy to enjoy even after the party has ended as a party favor.

Because it was Mark’s 30th birthday, I thought it would be fun to look back at pictures throughout his life from just an adorable baby that he was in diapers to driving his first car to graduating high school to us getting engaged and married and even pictures of us being silly last week. I used neon ribbon that I hung on the wall and taped pictures to it starting from the youngest pictures of him to the most recent. Everyone loved being able to look through all the memories of Mark’s life and celebrate him.

In the main area of the party of course there were presents. But I wanted people to be able to place their presents in a special place and not just sitting randomly wherever they could find a place. I made a Rubik’s cube box for everyone to sit their gifts and cards on. I used package tape to put the boxes together and then painted them black. Glue different neon colored squares on the size and you have yourself a giant Rubik’s cube. This was definitely a conversation piece and just so much fun to add that extra touch.

Totally Radical 80s Themed Party

You also can’t show up to an 80’s party and not be dressed appropriately in 80’s fashion. Everyone had so much dressing up and getting ready. My bathroom took me back to when I was a teenager with all the ladies trying to steal a spot in front of the mirror to apply that hot pink lipstick and bright blue eye shadow. We were teasing each other’s hair because face it, no one could ever get their hair big enough or use too much hair spray. I wore a hot pink shirt with fish net on the sides that had a wide neck and hung off the shoulder with a tank top underneath. I had zebra patterned shorts with neon green trim with black leggings underneath. My shoes were bright yellow and pink tennis shoes. I wore bright green hoop earrings and wore my hair in a side pony tail with a large hair tie similar to a scrunchie but not quite. My make-up was extremely bright and very heavy.

Fashion 2

I found Mark a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles t-shirt from Wal-Mart to wear. He loved them as a kid.

Fashion 3

Some men were showing off their 80’s style with the Members Only jackets. There were also bright and very large party sunglasses that I found at the dollar store for people to wear while taking pictures.

Totally Radical 80s Themed Party Part 1

Fashion 1

What’s a party without some fun games? For the first game, fill a jar with some type of small candy while counting how many pieces as you place it inside. I used sour patch kids and a mason jar. Have a small notepad and ink pens available for guest to write down their guess and place in a small bowl. After everyone has guessed and is mingling and socializing, check the entries for the winning guess. I picked the winner that was the closest, not necessarily the closest without going over.  The prize for the winner could be the actual jar with the candy. I chose to not give the jar and candy away but instead gave the 1st place winner a Wal-Mart gift card. The 2nd place winner received a large 80’s themed candy that I found at Cracker Barrel.

Another fun game that everyone enjoyed causing the competitive side to come out was an 80’s Trivia Game. I searched online for different 80’s movies, games, history of the 80’s, etc and also used questions from trivia games I found online. Pass out index cards and ink pens to your guests and let the games begin. For the 1st place winner, I also gave a Wal-Mart gift card. Who doesn’t shop at Wal-Mart? For the 2nd place winner, I had found a box of assorted 80’s candy that I also found at Cracker Barrel.

No party can be complete without presents! Because it was Mark’s 30th birthday, I wanted to give him something that would be memorable and also would include everyone at the party. I decided I would make a scrapbook filled with letters and pictures from his closest friends and family that stated memories people had with Mark, things they admired about him, advice for the future, and anything else they wanted to include. This does take some time and planning, so I advise you start ahead of time and give yourself plenty of time to put the scrapbook together. Give your guests enough time to write their letters. Mark loved everyone’s kind words and will always have something to look back on and read for years to come. I also loved being able to include everyone that came to the party.

Scrapbook 2

Because Mark’s party wasn’t on his actual birthday, I didn’t want him to think that his birthday celebrating was over so I made sure to have him some other presents for him to open on his special day. But keeping with the 80’s theme, I created an 80’s scavenger hunt that made him think a little before he could open his gifts.

Scavenger Hunt 1

Scavenger Hunt 2

This party was a blast and thrill to plan and also have everyone over to celebrate Mark. Even if you do not know anyone that was an 80’s baby to celebrate their birthday, this would also be fun for a costume party for Halloween or just to enjoy having friends over. Everyone had a great time, and now I can’t wait to throw another party!

I will be posting more articles with further details and pictures explaining different parts of the party even more to make it easier for you.
