We should all know by now that a favorite project of mine is anything upcycling and finding a new way to repurpose what some would call trash into something beautiful.

I have the perfect idea for your Spring table and centerpiece that you will absolutely fall in love with to bring back some bright color after a cold winter. Plus you can even enjoy a refreshing drink before you get to crafting.

You will want to head to Kroger to find the brand new, uniquely designed Diet Coke bottles from Coca-Cola that are only available for a limited time. Each bottle has its own design making no 2 bottles the same. I love that they are all unique like a snowflake, right?

Personalized Place Settings Using Washi Tape and Paper Straws

Once you have enjoyed your refreshing Diet Coke, rinse and clean the bottles but don’t dare throw them away. You can use them to spruce up your dining room table and bring some fun new color with this Spring centerpiece and place settings.

Spring Centerpiece

Personalized Place Settings Using Washi Tape and Paper Straws

Supplies:

  • Uniquely Designed Diet Coke Bottles
  • Flowers
  • Tray or plate
  • Twine
  • Washi tape
  • Clear tape
  1. Place the empty bottles on a tray that you would like to place in the center of the table.
  2. Place flowers inside each bottle.
  3. Cut a piece of twine that will be long enough to drape across the bottles.
  4. Place washi tape around the twine and stick the backs together to form a flag.
  5. Cut a triangle out of the bottom of each flag.

Personalized Place Settings Using Washi Tape and Paper Straws

6. Hang the ends of the twine to the end bottles allowing room for the banner to drape across the front.

7. I even placed the bottle caps on the tray for a little something extra. I have always loved collecting the bottle caps from glass bottles.

Personalized Place Settings Using Washi Tape and Paper Straws

With the touch of color from the bottle designs, the washi tape, and the flowers, you now have a colorful and beautiful centerpiece that is perfect to kick out those winter blues. Plus it doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg to decorate for each season when you can find items you already have that you would normally throw away.

To keep your table colorful and tie in the same theme with the Diet Coke bottles being used in the centerpiece, you can also use them to make personalized place settings.

Supplies:

  • Uniquely Designed Diet Coke Bottles
  • Paper Straws
  • Washi tape
  • Black permanent marker
  • Clear tape

Place a piece of washi tape around the paper straw sticking the backs of the tape to each other to form a flag.

With a black permanent marker, write the names of either your family members or guests that will be coming for dinner.

Personalized Place Settings Using Washi Tape and Paper Straws

Place the paper straw inside an empty bottle. You will need to place a piece of tape to the paper straw at the rim of the bottle to keep it from falling inside the bottle.

Personalized Place Settings Using Washi Tape and Paper Straws

You can now place the personalized bottles at each setting in place of a traditional place card. I love the idea of also being able to use both these ideas for a fun Spring themed tablescape or even for a fun Valentine’s Day dinner for the whole family to enjoy.

Personalized Place Settings Using Washi Tape and Paper Straws

The next time you go to throw away your “trash”, stop to think how you can reuse it and make something beautiful. These Diet Coke bottles are perfect for Spring activities with these kids.

Check out these fun and unique Diet Coke bottles that you can reuse for a place setting or Spring centerpiece. Every bottle has its own unique design and colors.

Just be sure to stop in at Kroger to see what designs you can find. Let me know in the comments below what ideas you may have to reuse your own bottles. Also be sure to check out more ideas for these unique bottles HERE.

Enjoy the Spring weather that will hopefully be here soon with a little extra color from these extraordinary Diet Coke bottles too.

Homemade Memory Game

There is just something about the adrenaline rush of finding a bargain, steal of a deal, clearance find, whatever you wanna call it. It truly can make my day sometimes.

That’s exactly what happened when I was shopping at a local discount store to our house and ran upon this box of Project Life cards for only $5.00.

Homemade Memory Game

I just about passed out in the aisle at what a huge discount this was. There were so many different colors and designs that I knew I would have a blast finding other ways to use them.

That’s when the idea to make a memory game struck. This was one of my favorite games to play as a child so I thought why not make a really cute version of it. Your kids will have a blast playing, and it’s even great to take on the road too.

Homemade Memory Game

Supplies:

  • Project Life cards
  • Paper cutter
  • Rounded corner punch
  • Adhesive runner
  • Laminating machine or Self-sealing laminating sheets
  • Scissors

Find the designs and cards that you want to use. You could also just as easily use scrapbook paper and have your kids decorate it for their own special touch.

Be sure to choose an odd number of designs so there will be a winner at the end and not a tie. I picked 13 different designs. I also picked 1 other design that I used for the front side that was the same. You will need enough cards in that 1 design to place on the back of the pairs. This same side is what will face up when you are playing.

I chose a simple design for every card on one side and then designs that were colorful and bright for the opposite sides.

Cut the cards in half using a paper cutter and then punch any corners with the rounded punch if needed.

Once you have pairs of 13 different designs, attach the other basic cards on the back using an adhesive runner.

You should now have 13 pairs of cards with 13 different designs on one side and the same design on the opposite side on every card.

I used a laminating machine to laminate mine so they would last much longer.

Place them inside the sheets and then place them into the machine. I used a notebook under each sheet to help me guide them into the machine and keep them from moving inside the sheet. Just be sure to not stick the notebook into the machine.

Homemade Memory Game

Now you can cut them out and get ready to play. If they try to peel open at all, place some adhesive on the inside and you should be good to go.

Homemade Memory Game

You are now ready to test your kiddos memory and have fun at the same time.

Homemade Memory Game

Talk about a sweet little homemade Christmas gift for your kids’ friends or maybe even for their classroom.

Make Your Own Reusable Lunchbox Love Notes

Now that everyone is back in school and the routines are all set, why not surprise your little one with a note in their lunchbox to let them know just how much you are thinking about them during the day? For the younger ones, not seeing their Mommy or Daddy all day can be rough. But once they go to lunch and see a note from you, their day can be all better.

Make Your Own Reusable Lunchbox Love Notes

I remember my Mom leaving me notes in my lunch every day that were simple but let me know how much she cares. Now you can do the same thing but have a note card that you can reuse throughout the entire school year.

How you might ask? You just need a laminating machine. If you don’t have one or don’t want to invest in one then you can also buy self-sealing laminating sheets that don’t require a machine.

Make Your Own Reusable Lunchbox Love Notes

Any notepad or scrapbook paper cut into small note card sizes would work perfect, but I have these adorable Project Life cards that work perfect and are just the right size. I actually found these and another box at a local discount store for only $5.00 a box. I know right?! That’s amazing.

Make Your Own Reusable Lunchbox Love Notes

I placed several in a laminating sheet and put it through the machine. And voila! I just love the fun in seeing something laminate. Now all you need to do is cut them out.

Make Your Own Reusable Lunchbox Love Notes

Use washi tape to attach them to your child’s Tupperware containers or the inside of the lunchbox. Write on them using dry erase markers and then all you have to do is wipe them off with a towel for the next day.

Make Your Own Reusable Lunchbox Love Notes

One of my Project Life cards had several different emotions listed with checkboxes beside them. I thought this was a perfect idea to use for your kids to write back to you how they’re feeling and make it easier for you guys to talk. Just don’t forget to include a dry erase marker in their lunchbox.

Make your own reusable note cards to send in your child's lunchbox everyday. The great part is that you can reuse them every day too. Get all the details at thesoutherncouture.com.

I hope you and your youngsters will enjoy this fun idea to pass notes at school! At least in their lunchbox and not during class. Plus I hope that they are all having a fantastic school year so far.

DIY Cupcake Stand

Cupcakes! Need I say more? They are delicious and come in so many different flavors. I especially enjoy trying the really decadent ones that are so beautiful that you almost don’t want to eat it. Keyword being ALMOST.

Well in order to make that cupcake even more special, you can now display it so everyone can see it and enjoy too. Especially if you are celebrating your child’s birthday with cupcakes, this cupcake stand is a great way to make them feel important and give them a fun way to enjoy it too.

DIY Cupcake Stand

What makes it even better is that you can find almost all the supplies you need at your local thrift store for just a few dollars? I was able to make several for only $3.00. Such a great upcycle for someone else’s trash too.

SUPPLIES:

  • Candle holder
  • Saucer
  • E6000 glue
  • Delicious cupcakes

DIY Cupcake Stand

*I wanted the look of something glamorous which is why I chose the gold and brass style that matched the plate perfectly. The glass in the picture below is also just a glass I happen to find that works perfect to place over the cupcake to keep it fresh.

Now all that’s left is to glue the top of the candle holder to the bottom of the plate with the E6000 glue. Let it dry completely or sit overnight for best results.

DIY Cupcake Stand

Your cupcake can now be displayed to celebrate someone special. And if you can’t think of a special occasion that is coming up soon, then it is never a bad thing to just have a cupcake for the fun of it.

Enjoy the little things in life which always should include a scrumptious cupcake. I prefer red velvet. What is your favorite? Let me know in the comments below. I would love to know and try something new.

My Idea of the Perfect Me Time

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertisers. All opinions are mine alone. I pinky promise! #FeelingInvigorated #FeelGlade #CollectiveBias

Everyday life can just become burdensome and overwhelming at times. Wouldn’t you agree? I have found myself there at certain times and just needed some time to take a break and check out. When I’m really stressed, my husband will even start a bubble bath for me and tell me to go relax.

My Idea of the Perfect Me Time

I can’t wait to share my idea of the perfect “Me” time to give you some pointers for your own rest and relaxation. Plus there’s even a fun craft that you can make too to get you right in the mood even when the beach isn’t in your back yard.

My perfect “Me” time is pretty much consumed in the bathroom. I like to start by lighting a candle and setting that relaxing mood. My most favorite candle recently has been the new Glade® Blue Odyssey™ Large Candle. You can get one yourself first at Walmart.

The candle is a blend of water, air, and earth with the most fresh and clean smell. When my mind is flooding with thoughts, I light this Glade® candle to settle my stress and pull my thoughts back together.

As a blogger myself, sometimes your creativity bank can seem to start running dry. There is just something about the scent of the Glade® Blue Odyssey™ Large Candle that is invigorating and gets those creative juices flowing. If you are in need of newfound passion and energy for your job, hobby, etc. then I suggest you get your matches!

In order to really rejuvenate myself and regain my passion, my Glade® Blue Odyssey™ Large Candle is the perfect addition to a bubble bath. Toss a fizzy bath bomb into a warm tub of water and the light and refreshing scent uplift your feelings. A handmade sugar scrub would just be the icing on the cake to finish off a relaxing night for myself.

My Idea of the Perfect Me Time

While I’m lying in my bubble bath, a warm cup of flavored tea really helps to relax me as well. I like to try new flavors and enjoy the warmth especially if I’m not feeling well. The tea isn’t overly sweet making it a great addition to a relaxing evening.

My Idea of the Perfect Me Time

Now that I’m relaxed and a new splurge of creativity has been born, I need to get it all out of my mind and onto paper so I don’t forget it later. Keeping a journal and cute pen (well the pen doesn’t have to be cute but it helps) nearby is a necessity. I love to write down notes and ideas that I have for new blog posts and projects.

My Idea of the Perfect Me Time

I mentioned earlier that the beach may not always be in your backyard, but why not bring the beach to you whenever you have the chance. So now you’ve heard about how I create the perfect environment to enjoy some “me” time at home, but outside of my house, my favorite stress escape location is the beach.  While relaxing next to the waves, my only care in the world seems to be what book I will read next.

However, the only down side is that I don’t always have access to a beach. That’s why I enjoy the Glade® Blue Odyssey™ Large Candle so much. It is so fresh, with hints of bright blooms and sweet peach along with the touch of amber and musk, it really makes the scent of the beach come alive in my home.

Now you can enjoy the ocean in any room with the fresh new scent of Glade® Blue Odyssey™ candle, which you can find first at Walmart. And the best part? The new and larger candle now burns up to 60 hours! You can also buy 2 Glade® Large Candles (9.2 oz.) at Walmart and receive a $5 virtual gift card.

I would love to know what helps you take a break from all the stress to relax again. Leave your suggestions in the comments below. If you are in need of some ideas, check out what others are saying HERE.

Enjoy the little things in life like a little “Me” time for yourself.

Simplest DIY Lace Infinity Scarf

Here’s to another exciting day of Shark Week! Wait I said that wrong… It’s actually Scarf Week in blogland in case you missed it already. Scarfs are taking over the internet. Yesterday I shared a fun idea to make a tie dye scarf with your kids this summer using a super soaker water gun and some stamped polka dots.

Go to your closet and transform an old t-shirt into a brand new lace infinity scarf. You can get the easy tutorial at thesoutherncouture.com that will only take a few minutes to make.

Today I have another scarf that is a breeze to make really and doesn’t require a lot of money or time. You will need to find an old t-shirt or buy an inexpensive one and a strip of lace. Craft stores sell it by the yard with many different patterns and designs of lace.

Simplest DIY Lace Infinity Scarf

Infinity scarves are all the rage lately but now add in some lace, and you have the best combo yet. Plus scarves aren’t just for winter and keeping warm anymore. Because this scarf is made from a lightweight t-shirt, you don’t have to worry about getting too hot in it.

Now let’s get started so you can start showing yours off right away.

Cut a horizontal line across the t-shirt directly below the underarms of the shirt. I used my rotary cutter and mat but scissors will work great too.

Simplest DIY Lace Infinity Scarf

Then cut your lace the same height of the shirt. Sew one side of the lace to the far left or right on the shirt. You could also hand stitch the lace as well if you do not have a sewing machine or try using a fabric glue.

Simplest DIY Lace Infinity Scarf

The picture below shows how the lace should look once laying the t-shirt out flat.

Simplest DIY Lace Infinity Scarf

Now put your arm through the middle of the scarf and bunch it together to form a scarf and place around your neck. You may need to work with the scarf and position to have the lace show best. Leaving one side of the lace not sewn down gives a looseness to the lace that I prefer.

Simplest DIY Lace Infinity Scarf

Now you just need to get to your closet and find an old shirt that you don’t wear anymore. My black shirt needed a new purpose and is actually super soft making it a great summer scarf.

Enjoy the little things in life like the detail of the lace that makes the whole scarf pop.

Tie Dye Infinity Scarf Using Super Soaker Water Gun

Remember those giant super soaker water guns that you had as a kid that maybe your siblings drove you crazy with. Maybe your kids now are still soaking you with one and having a blast doing it. Well now you can put all that energy into helping you becoming more stylish while they have a blast at the same time. Now how exactly can that happen you’re wondering.

You don't have to have a lot of money to dress up your wardrobe. Make your own from an old t-shirt with this no-sew tutorial from thesoutherncouture.com. Your kids can also help by tie dying their own.

You can enroll their help to make you a new summer infinity scarf. And if you have daughters or nieces, they can even make one for them and their friends too. You may want to first put on an old bathing suit or old clothes that you don’t mind getting ruined before getting started, because I can’t promise this won’t get messy with a water gun in play here. You know the temptation is real when holding that giant super soaker in hand.

I used a white t-shirt that I found on clearance at Wal-Mart for just a dollar or two. Start by cutting a straight line directly across the t-shirt from one armpit to the other. *You will no longer need the top portion with the sleeves of the shirt.

Tie Dye Infinity Scarf Using Super Soaker Water Gun

Begin preparing your fabric dye according to the package instructions.

Next twist portions of the shirt and tie off with a rubber band. You can also tie parts of it in knots. Be creative. The more twisted portions you have, the more rings and design you will have once it is finished.

Tie Dye Infinity Scarf Using Super Soaker Water Gun

Add the prepared dye to the super soaker water gun. Play around with different colors in each gun and just have fun with it.

Tie Dye Infinity Scarf Using Super Soaker Water Gun

Once you are done having a water gun fight, finish making your shirt according the dye package directions.

If you want to skip the water gun (I don’t know why you would want to, but…), you can also just use bowls to soak the t-shirt in the dye or cut a t-shirt that you like with either a design or solid and decorate it using fabric paint.

Tie Dye Infinity Scarf Using Super Soaker Water Gun

Place a piece of cardboard through the middle of the shirt to keep the paint from bleeding through to the other side of the shirt.

I chose the white t-shirt and used round spouncers (which are basically just circular foambrushes) to paint polka dots throughout the scarf. *Be sure to use fabric paint that can be washed if needed in the future to keep from the paint being washed off.

Tie Dye Infinity Scarf Using Super Soaker Water Gun

Once it has dried, put your arm through the middle of the scarf and bundle it up until you have an infinity scarf.

Tie Dye Infinity Scarf Using Super Soaker Water Gun

Your kids can also enjoy making their own tie dye shirts this summer too. I have fond memories of making my own as a child, and now you can relive all those again with the fun of a super soaker and some food coloring.

Enjoy the little things in life like the memories you will make this summer.

How to Remove Old Wax from a Candle Jar

One of my most favorite things to do when I’m relaxing around the house is to burn a sweet smelling candle. I must get this from my Dad actually because he always seems to have one burning.

Don't ever throw out your candle jars any more just because there is so much stubborn wax still in the bottom. Find the one item at thesoutherncouture.com that will remove the wax easily and without any mess.

But what happens when you get to the bottom of the candle? There always seems to still be a little bit of wax left that won’t burn down and that awful and messy black residue. You don’t want to just throw the nice glass jar out. Now you don’t have to. I have the easiest and quickest steps to remove that old wax and residue and have your jar shining in no time. Plus the best part is it’s not even messy either.

How to Remove Old Wax from a Candle Jar

You are only going to need a knife, fork, cloth, and Goo Gone. I love using Goo Gone on so many different surfaces to remove all those little bits of junk that are so frustrating.

First start by making cuts in the bottom of the wax cutting the candle in half and then again in fourths. Cut more slits until it’s in eighths. Then take the knife and cut around the entire circumference of the wax to help release it from the edges. *Be careful using a knife.

How to Remove Old Wax from a Candle Jar

Then take a fork and use it to start lifting the wax up and remove it from the jar.

How to Remove Old Wax from a Candle Jar

Pour some Goo Gone on a cloth and start wiping the glass jar until all the wax and residue has been removed. Also use the Goo Gone to help remove any labels or stickers. The Goo Gone helps take a lot of the work out of it where you don’t have to scrub really hard.

How to Remove Old Wax from a Candle Jar

Rinse the candle jar with water and wipe dry.

You now have yourself a crystal clear jar to use for just about anything else. Don’t ever throw out your old candle jars again and feel guilty about not upcycling it. Just be sure to grab some Goo Gone the next time you are shopping.
