5 Uses for Chalkboard Paint to Organize Your Life

Today it is my pleasure to have Bryn from Her Own Wings blog today sharing ways to keep your life more organized which is one thing we can all use more of.

Chalkboard paint seems like a novel idea and it’s possible you’ve grown tired of hearing about it. It’s beginning to feel a bit overdone and if you haven’t used it already, you may be resisting. No one wants to look too trendy. It’s true that is seems to be on everyone’s lips and in everyone’s home, but there are some interesting uses you may not have thought of. Using chalkboard paint in unexpected ways can help you organize your home and at Modernize that’s something we can all get behind.

  1. Create a chalkboard wall calendar.

Keeping track of your ever changing schedule can be chaotic. Erasing and scribbling in your paper planner can leave things a confusing mess. There is the magic of chalkboard, it can be erased and rewritten with ease. Just cut a large chalkboard decal into squares of your desired size and label each square with numbers for the dates. The calendar can be as big or small as you want and your tasks can be written and erased as your schedule changes.

  1. Make a chalkboard menu.

Let your family know what they can expect for dinner each week by making a chalkboard menu. Get everyone excited about the meals you prepare and inspire yourself in the kitchen. By planning your meals ahead of time, you’ll save money at the grocery store and make healthier choices. Border your menu with a frame to make it more attractive in your kitchen.

  1. Label your herb pots with chalk.

The herb selection in your garden probably changes year to year or even throughout the season. It’s possible your pots are also rotated. Make it easy to identify and grab what you want from your garden by painting your pots with chalkboard paint. You can write the name of each herb on the pot and simplify your life and your garden. You’ll even be able to ask your children to grab herbs for you while you’re in the kitchen. It can be an easy way to teach them about gardening and nutrition. This also makes a great gift for any gardener.

  1. Organize your dry goods in your pantry.

Chalkboard sticker labels are easy to find in any size or shape. There are so many uses for these labels but one that really stands out is in your pantry. Use chalkboard stickers to label the cans where you store dry goods. As your grains and cereals change, you can modify the tag. It will make things so much easier and organized in the pantry and will make mealtime a breeze.

  1. Label your tool drawers in the garage for easy access.

The garage can become a dumping ground for knick knacks, screws and tools. Any drawer space available turns into a junk drawer over time. Paint the drawers with chalkboard paint and label what is inside. It will keep you from throwing just anything in when you see the label and help you find things quickly and easily.

Bathroom and hygiene… Something a little odd and different from the usual blog huh? But it’s not as bad as it sounds. They really are centered around being organized and keeping chaos out of the bathroom. It is so much more difficult for me to get ready in the mornings when my counter tops are a wreck, and I can’t seem to find anything.

What I really hate is actually going to the bathroom and then noticing after it’s too late that someone didn’t replace the toilet paper roll before me when they used the last bit. I know what you are thinking, TMI, but please tell me I am not alone in this.

Never worry about sitting down and then finding out that someone before you didn't replace the toilet paper. Keep it hand and organized with this basket and chalkboard label. Get the full tutorial at thesoutherncouture.com.

My solution for this problem will hopefully help you too. Always keep extra toilet paper rolls within reach of the toilet. In my half bath/guest bath, there really isn’t a lot of space to do so which is why the TP tends to go missing so often in there.

By having the toilet paper within reach and keeping it organized, your bum will thank you! I love using baskets in my bathroom to store items. I have a large basket with white towels in it sitting on my garden tub within easy reach. The basket and towels just look so refreshing.

An ordinary basket would do the trick for this but, why not make it extra cute? After all it’s toilet paper and needs all the help it can get. I decided to hand a tag on the basket that said, “Please Refill.” I felt that it was a nice and polite gesture to remind my family to be courteous for the next person or any guests who may be over.

You can do the same with just a few supplies.

SUPPLIES:

Bath Tissue Organizer with Chalkboard Label

  1. First paint your label with chalkboard paint. You can find wooden tags and labels in the craft store. Also chalkboard spray paint makes everything so much easier.
  2. Once dry, hot glue gun a piece of twine to the back of the label leaving enough twine on each end to attach it to the basket.

Bath Tissue Organizer with Chalkboard Label

3. Write your phrase or title on the label with a chalk marker.

Bath Tissue Organizer with Chalkboard Label

4. Attach the label to the basket using the twine and feeding it through the holes. I tied mine in a bow on the inside of the basket  in order to remove it easily in the future if needed.

5. Place your bath tissue inside the basket and you are all set.

Now what bath tissue exactly is going in my basket? Quilted Northern Ultra Soft & Strong. There are a few things that I will a store brand or generic of, but bath tissue is one time that I love to buy the good stuff.

When I go to Walmart, the toilet paper aisle just seems overwhelming with all different brands and types. My personal preference is Quilted Northern because it is strong and flexible at the same time. I don’t have to worry about it ripping and separating. Plus the brand has been around for 100 years, so it must be trustworthy to stick around that long.

And let’s not even get started on softness, when I open the bath tissue package, it really does remind me of a baby blanket. Is that weird? Maybe, but oh well. I am just being honest after all.

School Year Weekly Planner + {Free Printable}

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #SchoolYearReady #Collective Bias.

Have you started with the back to school craziness in your household yet or maybe you are getting ready for it now? Schools have already started back where I live which means I also head back to school. I am also a school nurse actually which means I have to get myself organized for this time of year too.

School Year Weekly Planner + {Free Printable}

With the school year, it seems like every Sunday evening is a great time to regroup and get ready for what all lies ahead that week. I keep a written planner to help me, but in my clinic at school it is always nice to have something hanging that is a quick reference for me and others of what has to be done.

The same is true for your family and kiddos I’m sure. Especially with not only keeping track of school projects and field trips but also all of their after school sports and activities. A great way to have everyone on the “same page” and organized is to literally use the “same page.”

I have the perfect solution for your “same page” that everyone can use and keep everyone in the same loop. The even better part about it is that you can reuse it every week and start again. The magic is all in one simple machine… the Scotch™ Thermal Laminator. Pick yours up at Walmart in the back-to-school seasonal area today too. That’s where I found mine. You would think a laminator would cost a lot, but they are so inexpensive and will be great to have around the house in the future too.

School Year Weekly Planner + {Free Printable}

You can also purchase Scotch™ Self-Sealing laminating pouches that don’t even require a machine. How neat is that? I personally love having the machine so that I can now laminate just about anything I want to that you can think of. I don’t know why, but laminating is super fun to me.

School Year Weekly Planner + {Free Printable}

I have designed a printable for your weekly schedule to help everyone stay more organized. How cute is that chalk look?

School Year Weekly Planner + {Free Printable}

Once you put it through the laminator, your sheet is now like a dry erase type board and can be reused. But be sure to use dry erase markers and not permanent markers. Once the weekend comes, you are ready to wipe it off and get ready for another great week.

School Year Weekly Planner + {Free Printable}

I placed mine on a clipboard and hung it on a cork board with a dry erase marker hanging up as well to make it handy for anyone in the family to add things as the week progresses. You could also use different color markers for each child if you really want to stay even more organized.

School Year Weekly Planner + {Free Printable}

Hanging on my cork board as well are some Post-it® flags. These would be great to really highlight a special event or task that is of high importance to help you not forget.

If your family has a command center to keep things organized, this would be the perfect addition.

School Year Weekly Planner + {Free Printable}

I think the chalkboard look is absolutely adorable so how could you not print it.

Print yours HERE. Then start the laminating, and your family is on the track to a chaos free school year (Fingers crossed).

Let me know in the comments below what idea you would have for using the Scotch™ Laminating products. I would love to know how else I can use my laminator. If you are wanting more ideas, then come see what others are making HERE.

And be sure to enjoy the little things in life too even when some weeks you seem to barely be above water. They are only little for so long.

What All Pet Owners Should Have +{Free Printable}

This post was written in exchange for a leash and my honest opinion. All opinions are truthfully my own I promise.

Are your pets and animals your kids too? I know they are for me. I am a huge animal lover and I don’t know what I would do without my dogs. I probably treat them like kids more than pets in all reality, but I just can’t resist those adorable faces.

Because I am such a huge animal lover, I have been so excited to share this opportunity that was brought my way with y’all so you can join in on the fun. But keep reading below where you can find your free printable to keep you and your pets organized as well.

Now for the exciting part. I was approached by Tailwaggers, a new company, recently to try their brand new Hands Free Pet Leash because I have 3 of my own dogs and could really use the help when trying to walk them.

What All Pet Owners Should Have +{Free Printable}

I am only 4’11” and let’s just say not the body builder muscle type to man handle a couple of large labs plus keep up with my little ChiPom. Excuse the pictures, but I have to show them off. Aren’t they adorable?

What All Pet Owners Should Have +{Free Printable}

Because they are bigger dogs, they have been so many times when I would try to walk them that they would end up seeing something random and pulling my arm so hard that I would almost fall down and thankfully never hurt myself.

This hands free pet leash is just genius to me. It is made with a bungee for the leash that allows your pet to move freely, and if they decide to suddenly lunge, you don’t have to worry about being pulled down and hurting yourself.

What All Pet Owners Should Have +{Free Printable}

Below is a picture that shows all the cool features of the leash. One of my favorites is the fact that the bungee doesn’t go all the way to the end of the leash at your dog’s neck. I was worried that the bungee may pull at their neck constantly choking them, but that isn’t what happens at all.

What All Pet Owners Should Have +{Free Printable}

It attaches to you with a waist band. Then there are multiple hooks where you can walk more than one pet at a time. I really don’t know why I didn’t think of this before.

What All Pet Owners Should Have +{Free Printable}

Now for the part where you can get your own. For a limited time, they are offering my readers a huge discount. You can purchase the leash for only $3.00!! You can’t even buy one of those cheap regular leashes for that anymore. The leash is priced normally at $29.96 so that’s a huge discount. (You will be responsible for shipping unless you have an Amazon Prime account.)

The reason the price is so discounted is because all they are asking for is your honest review on Amazon. They need reviews and would love to have y’all try it first and let them know what you think.

I couldn’t be happier with mine and love sharing things that have made my life easier with everyone else too.

To get your discounted leash for only $3.00, all you need to do is enter the special discount code TAILWAGG at checkout. There is a limited quantity available at the discounted price so be sure to buy it now if you are interested.

Another essential for my fur babies is keeping a pet record of all their vaccinations and doctor visits. Because I’m a nurse, I give my dogs their vaccines and need a way to keep track of them and keep them all organized for when I have to board them when we go on vacation.

What All Pet Owners Should Have +{Free Printable}

I have a free printable for y’all too to help you keep your pet’s health organized. You can make notes of their recent doctor visits, vaccines, their vet’s information, and more to have on hand at any time. There is one blue and also pink for your choosing too.

I keep my pet’s records in a folder that is organized and easy to access when needed. Plus it makes it much easier when I’m boarding them to just grab the folder, and it’s all taken care of.

To get yours now, print the Blue one HERE and for the Pink one click HERE.

What All Pet Owners Should Have +{Free Printable}

Let me know what you think of your leash or printable as well in the comments below. And don’t forget to enter your discount code TAILWAGG at checkout and then leave a review letting them know you enjoyed it. Enjoy the little things in life like a nice relaxing walk with your pets.

Also if you have not already, please join me on FacebookPinterestInstagram, and Twitter. I would love to hear from you with any comments, suggestions, or ideas you may have.

Now that Spring has sprung, I am definitely in the mood to get the house cleaned and organized. There is no better feeling than getting rid of junk and things you don’t need any more making your house cleaner and more spacious.

This pantry makeover was completed with items from the dollar store making it a real money saver that won't break the bank. You will definitely want to check out how I used scrapbook paper to brighten and add more color over at thesoutherncouture.com

I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t always organizing and cleaning. As a child, my bedroom had to be neat and tidy with everything having a specific place to go. I have many fond memories of even organizing the shelves in Wal-Mart or Target as a young girl and not even getting paid for it. My sister and Mom would be shopping, and I needed something to keep me occupied. I think back now and just laugh at what a nerd I was, or maybe still am.

Not only do I like organization, but I love colors and making things pop with bright colors. So this pantry makeover is inspired by exactly these two things. I love the pantry makeovers I see that are so uniformed and elegant, but I just couldn’t do mine without adding color.

So let’s take a look at the before pictures, and yes they are quite horrible I have to admit. Please just excuse the mess and now I have at least done something about it right? I hope you like the new look too.

Budget Friendly and Colorful Pantry Makeover

At least my pantry was fully stocked just not organized or pretty at all.

I also wanted to challenge myself to keep this makeover to a budget. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to use some of the beautiful matching canisters I’ve found, but I couldn’t bring myself to pay that much for them. That’s when I decided to take a trip to the Dollar Tree and see what they had. They usually have the largest selection of plastic bins and tubs.

I found these green plastic baskets for only $1 each. The pink and blue smaller baskets came with 3 in a bunch for $1.

Budget Friendly and Colorful Pantry Makeover

For grains, rice, seeds, etc. I found these small clear canisters. I love the way they look uniformed but didn’t cost me $10 each like most other retailers.

Budget Friendly and Colorful Pantry Makeover

The set of stainless steel canisters pictured below were actually my great-grandmothers. I remember after she passed away, there were so many great things of her that I loved and couldn’t wait to use in my house one day.

Budget Friendly and Colorful Pantry Makeover

Although I have different canisters, stainless steel and clear, I love the vintage look of using different pieces. Some of the ones below were ones that either I already had or bought at a yard sale. The bread box was also a wedding gift to us that I have loved so much.

Budget Friendly and Colorful Pantry Makeover

Getting reorganized doesn’t have to be expensive or some proper thing. Use what you already have and buy a few other inexpensive things to go with it.

The kraft sticker labels were also a great find from the Dollar Tree. I got two different packs with different designs and can’t wait to use them to organize other areas of my house.

Budget Friendly and Colorful Pantry Makeover

To bring all the colors together, I got different designs of scrapbook paper with bright colors and floral patterns. I placed scrapbook adhesive squares on the back of each sheet and then placed them on the wall above each shelf. The paper stayed easily and added that extra pop of color.

Budget Friendly and Colorful Pantry Makeover

I hope this pantry makeover has inspired you to do some Spring cleaning and organizing without having to break the bank at the same time. Enjoy your Spring and all the beautiful colors it brings with it.

My Favorite DIY Jewelry Cleaner Featured Image

I must admit that one of my favorite things is my set of wedding rings. I am not trying to be materialistic, but I just think that it is gorgeous personally as I’m sure all of you feel the same way about yours. I love for it to sparkle and really get lost staring at it. (You think I’m joking, but I’m not. Totally dead serious.)

Don't ever buy expensive jewelry cleaners ever again with all those harsh chemicals. You can make your very own for much less money too. See the few ingredients you need at thesoutherncouture.com. Chances are you already have them in your pantry.

I used to take it to the jewelry store where my husband bought it and they would clean it for me for free. I started to find that it wasn’t always easy to find the time to stop by and sit waiting for it to clean. I also didn’t want to buy any harsh store bought cleaners with lots of chemicals. As you can see below it definitely needs a good cleaning right now.

My Favorite DIY Jewelry Cleaner 2

I have researched lots of different types online and found that this one is my most favorite. I use it on silver and my diamond ring.

My Tiffany & Co. necklace pictured below was a gift from my parents several years ago and does have several scratches. I have noticed though after I clean it that they aren’t as noticeable. This necklace also somehow got Mountain Dew spilt on it before and left a sticky residue. The cleaner was also great for that too.

My Favorite DIY Jewelry Cleaner 1

What you will need:

  • Small bowl
  • Aluminum foil
  • Soft cloth
  • Salt
  • Baking Soda
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Warm water
  • Jewelry

*I do not measure an exact measurement for the salt, baking soda, and dishwashing liquid. I usually just add a good spoonful of the salt and baking soda and a squirt or two of the dishwashing liquid. It really just depends on how much jewelry needs to be cleaned.

My Favorite DIY Jewelry Cleaner 12

Place a sheet of aluminum foil in the bowl. Add salt, baking soda, and dishwashing liquid first.

My Favorite DIY Jewelry Cleaner 3

Then add warm water and stir together some.

My Favorite DIY Jewelry Cleaner 4

My Favorite DIY Jewelry Cleaner 5

Place the jewelry in the water bowl and let sit for about 20 minutes.

My Favorite DIY Jewelry Cleaner 6

*If the jewelry is really dirty, you could let sit for longer.

As you can see below, the water turned a nasty color, but I know it’s working.

My Favorite DIY Jewelry Cleaner 7

Take your jewelry out and wipe off with soft cloth.

My Favorite DIY Jewelry Cleaner 8

My ring has several tiny grooves so I used a toothbrush and gently rubbed to remove any excess “gunk.”

My Favorite DIY Jewelry Cleaner 9

Then rinse the jewelry in cool water and wipe again with a soft cloth. Your jewelry will be sparkling! Check out these before and after pictures.

My Favorite DIY Jewelry Cleaner 13

I am so happy to have a jewelry cleaner that is inexpensive to make and also consists of items that I usually always have on hand.

Now go get you jewelry sparkling and enjoy it as it glows!

Also if you have not already, please join me on Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, and Twitter. I would love to hear from you with any comments, suggestions, or ideas you may have.

*Disclaimer: I am not an expert in jewelry, stones, or diamonds. I cannot say what jewelry is safe to use with this cleaner. I can only recommend what works great for me from my own experiences. What I can say is that my diamond ring sparkles!!

How-to-Use-Your-Planner-to-Assist-in-Acheiving-Your-Goals-Featured Image

This is your year to not only dream up goals, but I want to show you how to use your planner to assist in achieving your goals. My planner has become my best friend and cheerleader with helping me achieve my goals. Instead of thinking of New Year’s resolutions, I like to think of goals I have for a new year with a fresh start.

We all set new goals, but most of us don't end up achieving them. When we write them down, the goals become more real and are more likely to be achieved. Get tips from thesoutherncouture.com to help you use your planner to hold you accountable and get things done.

In order to achieve those goals and be conscious of remembering them throughout the year, I MUST write them down! Our lives are busy enough without trying to remember what our goals were at the beginning of the year.

How to Use Your Planner to Assist in Acheiving Your Goals 3

Writing your goals down also makes you more accountable and responsible to work toward them. I can’t even tell you how many times I have said, “I will start doing _____________ Monday” and then Monday comes and I never start it. When I make a point to make a list and write the goals down, then I am reminded and not as likely to just blow it off.

It’s important to write our goals down, but it doesn’t just stop there. If you are setting some pretty big goals like running a marathon, then it would only make sense to write down steps to help you achieve that goal such as a training plan and meal plan.

The perfect way for me to stay on track with achieving my goals and not become frustrated is to USE THAT PLANNER. I shared earlier this week how I keep my life organized using my planner and washi tape.

How to Organize Your Planner With Washi Tape 15

Part of that planner, is writing down not only my goals, but things I need to do to achieve those goals.

In the back of my planner, I have my goals written down on a piece of scrapbook paper and taped down with washi tape. Gotta love the extra fun that washi tape brings.

How-to-Use-Your-Planner-to-Assist-in-Acheiving-Your-Goals-5

Underneath that piece of scrapbook paper, I write down ways to accomplish my goals as a plan.

How to Use Your Planner to Assist in Acheiving Your Goals 1

Tackle your goals week by week. As a part of my weekly calendar, there is a notes section where I write down those things that I need to do to keep my goals.  The weekly part is just a way that breaks it down and helps you overtime to stay focused. Then every day I am reminded what I need to do. I will also make daily list to keep with me that are handy little reminders.

How to Use Your Planner to Assist in Acheiving Your Goals 2

Don’t beat yourself up though if you don’t get everything done that week. The great thing about planning weekly is that you can get back on track the next week and make up for it. Just try not to keep a habit of that.

It is a great feeling to be able to check things off your to-do list. It will feel even better as the year progresses and even at the very end of the year, and you have stuck with it to achieve your goals and accomplish great things!

Now I would love to share my goals with all of you and plans I have set in place in order to do so. Hopefully this will help you have a better idea of how I plan. Some of these are more short term that I can accomplish in a month or so and others are long-term to work toward the entire year.

I have color coded them to show how they coordinate with each other according to the key that I keep at the back of my planner.

How to Organize Your Planner with Washi Tape 8

*Workout 4 days.

How to Use Your Planner to Assist in Acheiving Your Goals 4

I hope you will find that writing your goals down and having a plan to use in your planner will help you as much as it does me. Good luck with your goals this year too! It is never too late to set some goals that you would like to accomplish this year. If you haven’t already then jump in now. Enjoy the feeling of accomplishment and enjoy the little things in life too.

Comment below and share with me what your goals are too. I would love to hear so we can encourage each other.

How to Organize Your Planner with Washi Tape

Part of staying more organized for me with a new year starting is using a planner which is why I want to share with y’all how to use a planner with washi tape. Washi tape comes in so many different textures, styles, and colors which is great for adding an extra pop of color to decorate your planner pages with. I still do this but have found that washi tape can also be used to keep me organized better this year.

Keep yourself more organized by using washi tape in a planner. These tips and pointers from thesoutherncouture.com. will help you keep things straight.

First of all the planner that I am using is a simple one that I found in Marshalls. I loved the gold polka dots and gold writing inside.

How to Organize Your Planner with Washi Tape 1

While I was shopping I also found this gorgeous Jonathan Adler case with a journal inside. I took out the journal and the planner fit inside perfectly.

How to Organize Your Planner with Washi Tape 2

Seriously that clasp on the case is just that little extra cuteness that sold me completely.

How to Organize Your Planner with Washi Tape 3

When I am looking at a planner I want something that has not only a monthly calendar but also weekly. For me there just isn’t enough room on the monthly days to write in extra notes. This planner also came with an address book in the back and a notes section. I am not sure how much I will use the address book, but it doesn’t take up that much space in the back. I can always use it for more notes instead.

How to Organize Your Planner with Washi Tape 5

So now to the fun part of using washi tape in your planner. You can find washi tape at a numerous different places including craft stores, Target, Wal-Mart, and I have even found some at the dollar store before. You will need several different colors depending on how many categories you will have which I will explain later. Be careful in choosing a washi tape that doesn’t have a busy design where you can’t actually read your writing once you write on it. Washi tape also comes in different widths. Pick something that isn’t too thick and would take up to much room in each daily space on your calendar. I found the one below with five colors in a case that also cuts it for you at Michaels. With a coupon it was an even better value than actually buying them all separate.

How to Organize Your Planner with Washi Tape 6

You will also want some colorful washi tape with fun designs and patterns just to use to decorate any empty space to add a pop of color.

In the back of my planner, I have written down a key for my calendar in order to have a specific color of washi tape designated for each category in my life. I broke down my planner into Home/Family, Church, Appointments, Bills, Blog, and Work. I have washi tape for each category on the monthly calendar.

How to Organize Your Planner with Washi Tape 8

For the weekly calendar, I chose to just use a coordinating colored ink pen. I put more notes on my weekly calendar therefore I need more space than the washi tape with allow. Below are some ink pens from Recollections that I bought on clearance from Michaels. They have a thicker end and fine point end making it great for a planner depending on how thick you want the ink to be throughout your planner. The package on these pens says they are ideal for rubber stamping as well so you get that extra benefit. I still use an ultra-fine point Sharpie marker to write on top of the washi tape.

How to Organize Your Planner with Washi Tape 7

Now that we have all the supplies covered, let’s start with the monthly calendar.

How to Organize Your Planner with Washi Tape 10

You are going to use the key you developed for your washi tape depending on what event you have on a certain date. For example, on January 19 I have a holiday leave from work so I used the designated work washi tape. Tear or cut a small piece and place it on that date. I have found that the Sharpie works the best to write on top of the washi tape. The great thing about the washi tape too is that if something changes in your schedule, the washi tape can be easily removed and placed on a different day if needed without ripping the planner. We can plan ahead as best we can but sometimes things still just change which is why I love this method.

I also used some additional washi tape to decorate the extra space on the side of my monthly calendar. I don’t use the notes section on the side of the monthly calendar making it a great place for me to decorate. I place my notes on the weekly calendar.

Now we can move on to the weekly calendar. On each day of the week, I have plenty of space to write notes as I need to of things that I need to get done, appointments, bills that are due. I use the colored ink pens here keeping me organized with each area of my life.

I also tend to get so organized with it that I will usually designate a specific space on each day for each category. That is taking things to a whole other organizational level which is not necessary.

You will also notice that I have added extra washi tape on the sides and between each day really for just decoration and to add more color. If it gets too busy for you, then you can just keep it simple without all the extra.

Feel free though if you love journaling and scrapbooking like I do, to use scrapbook paper and stickers as well for more decoration.

On each week of my planner, there is also a notes section. I use it to keep track of goals that I have set for the year. This is a way for me to keep track of them and my progress every week towards those. I will be sharing more about that later this week in a separate post to show you how to use your planner to help you achieve your goals this year.

On the weekly planner, I also place a different color of washi tape to write down meal plan ideas or what we end up having for dinner. This helps me to keep track of what we have eaten and how many times we are eating out. Personally I have found that this helps me especially with budgeting and keeps me in check.

In the front of the planner, I keep a small notepad in case I need it for notes or reminders. I don’t always have my colored pens with me so I will write a note or reminder on the notepad and then transfer to my calendar with the coordinating colored pen later.

Getting organized at the beginning of a year is so important. I love having things written down every week to keep me in check. On Sunday I have started sitting down to look at the week ahead and plan everything. It also keeps me reminded of any bills that are due so I don’t get a late payment either. And if you are anything like me, I always love to make lists daily of what I want to accomplish.

Writing things down is the best way to make progress on your goals. Which I will be sharing more of later this week in part 2 of this planner and organizational series. I cannot wait to share with you my goals and encourage you to make your own for this great year ahead. Enjoy decorating your planner, and as always enjoy the little things in life.

Make Your Own Household Cleaners Featured Image

This time of year really encourages me to keep up with my house cleaning with the holidays and people visiting which is why I am sharing a couple of recipes to make your own homemade cleaning products. They are quick and easy to mix up and are so much cheaper than buying the store bought stuff that has who knows what in it. I am all about saving money when I can. Plus I love the idea of knowing exactly what is in my cleaner and knowing it is also safe for my pets too.

You no longer have to worry about all the chemicals that go into your household cleaners. Find out the recipes at thesoutherncouture.com to make your very own.

There is nothing worse than having the motivation to clean your house and getting in a cleaning mood, to find that you are out of a particular type of cleaner or do not have enough to complete the whole house. If I am in a cleaning mood, I definitely want to take advantage of it and not let the lack of cleaner keep me from getting things done.

My homemade dust cleaner and all-purpose floor cleaner are the two that I go to most. Dust seems to appear magically and drives me crazy. I am constantly trying to keep my floors clean due to having dogs in my house. Therefore these are the best cleaning products for me to have around.

Both of these cleaners include white vinegar. Who doesn’t love vinegar? I remember my grandmother using vinegar when I was younger and still to this day she claims it is good for everything. I used to think that vinegar was so gross and how she must be crazy but now that I have a house to clean and keep up, I see just how smart she really is. I have actually come to enjoy the smell of vinegar now which would have seemed so bizarre to me as a child. Vinegar is also extremely inexpensive and goes such a long ways.

Furniture Polish:

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups water
  • ¾ cups white vinegar
  • 2 tsp olive oil

Mix the ingredients together in a spray bottle using a funnel to pour them more easily. Screw the spray nozzle back on and shake well to combine the oil with the liquid. You are now ready to spray your furniture and wipe clean with a soft cloth.

This is also a great homemade leather cleaner. It gives a gorgeous shine to what appears to be such dull leather before.

All-Purpose Floor Cleaner

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Dawn original dish liquid
  • A little less than one gallon of warm water

I use a gallon plastic jug to combine and mix my cleaner in. That way I have some made up in advance to use in the future instead of having to make it so often.

Using a funnel to make it easier, pour in the warm water but not all the way to the top being careful to leave enough room for the vinegar and dish liquid and also some room to shake to combine.

*If you put the vinegar and dish liquid in first, when you add the water it will start bubbling and will be a big soapy mess making it hard to get the jug filled completely with water. It would make it easier to measure the ingredients and pour them in, but trust me I learnt from experience.

Add the white vinegar and Dawn dish liquid. Shake the jug to combine ingredients. Once the bubbles settle some, I then use a funnel to pour into a spray bottle.

Spray the floor in small sections at a time and then use a mop with a dusting cloth attached to it to wipe over the floors. I have an old Bona floor cleaner mop that I use, but it is much cheaper this way to make my own cleaner than buying the Bona refills.

This can also be a hardwood floor cleaner even though you are using water. Many people are hesitant with putting water on hardwood floors, and they should be because too much water can soak into the floors and damage the hardwood. But by using the spray bottle, you are only applying a minimal amount of water making it completely okay. You would never want to use a regular mop with the hardwood floors and this cleaner like you would do on tile floors.

Now get up from your couch and get some cleaning motivation. Most people talk about spring cleaning, but I think this time of year is a great way to motivate us to do the same thorough cleaning. We are pulling out boxes from out attics or basements with Christmas decorations which stirs up more dust and always those annoying little green pieces that come off the branches of the artificial trees.

Most of us either have Christmas parties or company coming over for dinners so this is also a great motivation to get cleaning. Just don’t break the bank while also saving money for Christmas gifts by buying expensive cleaners. Make your own and save some money at the same time.

Most of us don’t enjoy cleaning, but find joy in even cleaning and the little things because it means you are blessed to have a house to clean and a family to clean for even though they make messes.

Craft Room Organization with Framed Pegboard Featured Image

Do you ever get tired of the mess and clutter in your craft room to the point that you just can’t stand it anymore? I will get busy working on different projects while juggling the everyday demands of life and sometimes the mess just has to wait. Don’t worry; it isn’t going anywhere. As a matter of fact, it is always waiting on me when I come back. I began organizing and redoing the look of my craft room a couple of months ago but haven’t really been happy with the feel of it until I found this adorable organization pegboard from Designed by Dawn Nicole. I love her style and all the inspiration. I fell in love with it immediately and told my husband we had to go to Lowes ASAP! He looks at me and just smiles knowing that another craft project is in the works.

Take your craft room and organization to another level with a framed pegboard. Get the step-by-step directions from thesoutherncouture.com and never search for hours for that one craft supply you just have to have. Plus her organizational ideas to use on the pegboard are super helpful and inexpensive too.

We made it to Lowes shortly after and little did we know that our small, “good on mileage” car was not made to carry pegboard around. It was quite interesting attempting to get the pegboard that we had already bought into the back seat of our car. People were walking by staring at us as we pushed and pulled struggling to get in. Well perseverance and determination is key. I am happy to report that the pegboard made it home with only a few minor scratches that I was able to hide with spray paint anyways.

This project is not too expensive to make and is especially cheaper than if you bought something similar in store. You can make it as detailed and expensive as you would like depending on the accessories you use to organize and decorate with. The great thing as well is that this is something you can change and add things to the more you work with it until you have it just the way you want it. I am quite the perfectionist and spent a lot of time rearranging my board.

What You Will Need:

4’ x 4’ Pegboard

Molding- We have a large supply of molding in our garage from where the builder of our house had extra and left it here. This was a huge cost saver for us. But your molding can be as expensive or inexpensive you want depending on what style you like. I think the molding is what made this project so great because it takes the look to another level and is well worth it.

Liquid nails

Wood screws

Hammer

Spray paint- I chose two different colors: one for the pegboard and one for the molding. I used a spray paint for the molding that was primer and paint both included. With the primer included, it is a little more expensive but is worth not having to buy more cans to cover the wood if the wood just soaks up the paint. Plus it takes out an extra step of having to sand the wood.

Paint primer– You can also use paint primer to paint the wood molding if you choose to not use spray paint with primer included.

Craft Room Organization with Framed Pegboard 6

Paint brush– if using paint primer

Pegboard accessories kit– I found one at Lowes that came with many different parts and hooks.

2 1” X 2” wood pieces

T-square or tape measure

Miter saw

Pencil

Power drill

Organization Items- Look around the house for different baskets, shelves, etc. to use for organizing. Also check out the dollar store where you can find baskets and similar items for only $1.

Let’s Get Started!

Measure your molding using the T-square or tape measure. Because my pegboard was 4’ long, I measured the molding to be the same.

Craft Room Organization with Framed Pegboard 14

Using a miter saw, cut at a 45 degree angle.

Craft Room Organization with Framed Pegboard 16

Continue for the other 3 pieces of molding as well. I used the first piece I cut to measure and mark the other pieces.

Craft Room Organization with Framed Pegboard 3

Once all your wood is cut in the correct lengths depending on the size of your pegboard, you can now spray paint your pegboard.

Craft Room Organization with Framed Pegboard 13

Spray paint your molding as well but with a different color depending on what style you want. I had bought spray paint that included primer. I forgot that it had primer in it as well and painted my molding with primer and allowed it to dry.

Craft Room Organization with Framed Pegboard 9

Once it was dry, I went ahead and spray painted it. Let’s just say my molding should have plenty of primer.

Craft Room Organization with Framed Pegboard 2

Once the pegboard and molding are all dry, I squirted liquid nails on the back of the molding and immediately placed on the top of the pegboard.

Craft Room Organization with Framed Pegboard 8

I then placed heavy objects on all 4 corners to help the molding adhere to the pegboard. I then allowed it to sit overnight.

Using a miter saw, cut the 1” X 2” wood into two pieces measuring 4’ each or whatever length your pegboard is.

Craft Room Organization with Framed Pegboard 10

You are now ready to hang your pegboard. Once you see it hanging, the excitement truly begins.

Measure the wall and mark where you want to hang your pegboard.

Using the wood screws and a power drill, attach the 1” X 2” pieces to the wall first. This helps to secure the pegboard and also allows you to place the different attachments to the pegboard and move them around as well when needed.

*Quick Tip: Be sure to not place your wood pieces all the way to the top of the board and the bottom. You need to be able to screw through the pegboard onto the wood pieces. If not, then you will have to screw through the wooden frame. I personally ended up screwing through the wood frame to ease myself that it was more secure. It is not necessary though.

Then once the wood pieces are screwed into the wall, you will need someone to help you hang the pegboard. I drilled 3 screws through the top and the bottom of the pegboard into the wood pieces.

Now take a step back and look at the beauty before your eyes.

You are now ready to organize all your supplies. You will not regret this project. I love organizing things so much! It is a natural high for me for sure.

I grabbed a couple baskets from the dollar store that worked perfect.

Look around your house for random shelves and other décor items that you may have bought and planned to use later but still haven’t. I had several decorative shelves that I bought at Goodwill but never actually hung or used.

This wooden shelf came with 4 glass jars that I found at Ikea. I ended up splitting them apart and using them differently but loved them so much!

The large wooden “F” is actually a piece of décor that was used at my wedding to add a little extra flair.

Craft Room Organization with Framed Pegboard 23

I also left some space to use for any future craft item purchases that need to be organized.

To the right of the pegboard, I hung a decorative cabinet that I also found at Goodwill to hold my sewing thread. They are specific organizers for thread that you can purchase at any craft store but like the uniqueness of this one and that extra design it gives to the room.

Craft Room Organization with Framed Pegboard 27

One last thing that I want to say about this pegboard organizer, is that the possibilities are endless for how you choose to organize everything. I like to have things grouped together that I use together such as the paint with the foam brushes and paintbrushes side-by-side.

Craft Room Organization with Framed Pegboard 19

I am in love with this pegboard and cannot wait to start my next project using all my organized tools. This pegboard is one to enjoy for many craft projects in the future. Just don’t forget to enjoy the little things in life as well!
