Now that the sun is shining and the weather is finally warming up, it is now time for bathing suits, shorts, beach trips, and pool parties. Because bathing suit season is so close upon us, I know for me that means wanting to shed a few extra pounds I may have put on during all the yummy holiday eating.

These tacos are delicious and also very easy to make for that weeknight dinner. Try them with chicken or ground turkey too. You won't believe how simple the cream sauce is to make too but sounds so fancy. Get the full recipe at thesoutherncouture.com.

Cooking healthier can get boring sometimes with the same recipes and go-to meals if you aren’t careful. For me and Mark that means sitting down each week searching for new healthy recipes and making a grocery list. If I don’t plan ahead, then it is so easy to be tempted to get fast food.

If you are looking for something different but is still delicious to change things up a bit, then I have the perfect recipe for you. These blackened tilapia tacos can also be changed up a bit if you don’t like seafood. I have also made the recipe the same but used chicken. Mark really loves the chicken maybe even better than the tilapia, but I love the tilapia!

The inspiration for this recipe came from a local Mexican restaurant that me and Mark recently discovered. I ordered three tacos with corn tortillas and had a variety of meat to choose from. They were delicious, but it got me to thinking that I could make the same thing at home plus I would know what exactly was in it.

Blackened Tilapia Tacos with Avocado Cream Sauce

Ingredients:

  • 2 Tilapia fillets
  • Corn tortillas

Blackened Seasoning:

  • 2 tbsp Paprika
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Onion powder
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 ½ tsp Cayenne pepper
  • 1 1/2 tbsp Black pepper
  • ½ tsp Oregano

Slaw:

  • 3 oz Prepackaged Broccoli slaw
  • 1 tbsp Lime juice
  • ¼ cup Cilantro
  • Small onion diced
  • Salt to taste

Avocado Cream Sauce:

  • ¼ cup Plain Greek yogurt
  • ½ Avocado
  • 1 tbsp Lime juice
  • ¼ cup Cilantro
  • Salt to taste

Preheat the grill at medium-high about 10 minutes before grilling the tilapia.

Combine the spices for the blackened seasoning in a small bowl and then rub on each piece of tilapia. The above amount of seasoning is enough for 2 pieces of tilapia with some extra depending on how much seasoning you prefer. Set aside until ready to grill.

Combine the ingredients for the slaw and refrigerate until ready to serve.

In a food processor combine all the ingredients for the avocado cream sauce. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Now that your grill is heated, grill the tilapia on each side for approximately 3-4 minutes.

Once the fish is done, I like to warm my corn tortillas in a small pan on the stove by spraying the pan with non-stick olive oil spray between each shell.

Before assembling the taco, I usually will lightly shred the tilapia into small pieces and then place in a shell. Top it with the slaw and avocado cream sauce. I also top mine with a homemade salsa consisting of tomatoes, onions, cilantro, salt, and lime juice.

Two pieces of tilapia makes about 6 tacos which is enough for me and my husband.

I serve with tortilla chips and homemade salsa.

I hope you will enjoy this delicious dinner and not have the regret and guilt that you normally would after eating a Big Mac. If you want to make it even healthier, you could also try making Paleo friendly tortilla shells instead.

That looks delicious, my only question is ‘what is broccoli slaw?’ I never heard of it. Can you buy it pre-made or do you have to make it?

Broccoli slaw is usually found in a bag in the produce section near the bagged salad mix. Interesting that it’s called broccoli slaw because it has carrots and different cabbages in it. Great question and sorry for any confusion.

Oh my! I love tilapia because it doesn’t taste like seafood like you would typically think. Using chicken in them is also really good.

OMG! I can’t believe you have never had a fish taco before. They are so delicious! I have been hooked ever since I had my first one. Now we cook them at home a lot and love them. Let me know if you try them.

I have been able to keep mine refrigerated for about 2-3 days. Adding the lime juice helps to keep the avocado from turning brown.

OH I am so glad y’all enjoyed them. They are definitely a favorite in my house. They are also really delicious with blackened chicken and shredded pork. I am actually planning to have these in our house this week too.

You are so welcome! I am so happy to hear that y’all enjoyed them. They are definitely one of our favorites too. I actually made them last night but used shredded pork that I placed in the crock pot yesterday morning and it was delicious too.

Oh Thank you so much! This is definitely one of my most favorite recipes to keep on hand. It’s easy to make which makes it even better but still so delicious. I actually had these Friday night again. The great thing too is that you can always change the meat depending on what you have on hand.

These are so good! I found this recipe on Pinterest, and I made these tonight for my parents and myself. My mom kept going “Mmmm!” and my stepdad said they were the best fish tacos he’s ever had (and he’s 73 from CA, so he’s probably had a fish taco or two…) 😉 I followed the recipe exactly, except I doubled it and used regular coleslaw mix, because they were out of broccoli slaw in our grocery store. We also added chopped tomatoes on our tacos. This is definitely a keeper, thank you!!

    • Bethany
      Bethany says:

That is such a huge compliment considering your stepdad has probably eaten many good fish tacos even from food trucks which are the best. I am so glad your family enjoyed them and a wonderful dinner together. My husband also likes the diced tomatoes on his. We have this recipe about once a week in our house too. We are definitely addicted.

I’d LOVE for you to stop by our new link party any time tomorrow (Wed) through Sat and link these bad boys up. We actually make the features at our party! Hope to see you!

Thank you so much! Fish tacos are definitely one of my favorites. These were actually grilled with the blackened seasoning but I have grilled them as well and they are just as delicious.

What is the best alternative to grilling as I don’t own a grill? Can I bake or cook in a pan?

    • Bethany
      Bethany says:

Absolutely! Great question! I have done both and it turns out great. If you are wanting something that is a little more crispy, I suggest cooking in a pan on the stove top. Baking is even easier because you just put it in and let the oven do the work. Both are great alternatives. Thanks for asking!

Haha! This comment had me frowning and smiling all at the same time. At first, I’m thinking oh no what did I do? Then I’m melting over here like how sweet you are. I am so glad you enjoyed it. It is definitely a favorite in my house and one that we enjoy on a regular basis. The avocado sauce is probably my favorite part of the entire thing. I use it as a dip with my tortilla chips too.

Thanks again for your sweet words and have a great week!
