Using certain art mediums in a journaling Bible may seem impossible, but Bible journaling with one simple painting technique is totally possibly and brings so much color to the pages.

In the last part of my “All About the Bible Journaling” series, we learned how to achieve an ombre effect using watercolors and one simple tool. The outcome looks professional and more difficult than you would think. The same can be said for today’s technique of actually painting directly to your Bible pages using acrylic paint.
Before we actually start painting, I wanted to recommend the paint set from Illustrated Faith. It includes 6 tubes of different colors and is so easy to mix to get that perfect shade you are looking for.

Now you are probably thinking, “How am I going to paint my Bible pages?” No problem! All you need is an old rewards card, shopping card, credit card, gift card, etc. (I can’t take full credit for this technique. I first learned about it from Illustrated Faith but wanted to share it with y’all because it is so fun and addictive especially if you love bright pops of color.)
#1:Dip the edge of one end of the card into the acrylic paint.
#2: Practice the following technique on scrap paper or extra pages in the back of your Bible before painting the actual entry.
#3: Scrape off any excess paint and then rub or scrape the card across the page painting a swipe of color.
#4: Continue painting in the design you desire and allow to dry before using another color. You can also dry the page using a heat gun or embossing heat gun. Just be careful to not hold it too close to the page.
#5: Continue with the same technique in any additional colors you would like. You can now finish your entry with any lettering, stickers, etc.
If you make sure to apply the paint thin enough and do not load the gift card with excessive paint, you shouldn’t need to prep the page with gesso before. If it makes you feel better to do so, then feel free. You can check out more about prepping your pages [here]. Also try out this fun and simple technique of using a baby wipe to paint in your Bible that you can see in the image below.
One common question as well is, “Will I still be able to read the scripture through the paint?”. With most colors, you can definitely still read the page as long as your paint is thin enough on the card and not applied too heavy.
As I have said before, I always recommend practicing on the extra blank pages in the back of your Bible first to see how the page will handle a certain technique and just to give you practice if it’s your first time. Let me know if you have any questions in the comments below. I hope you enjoy and God bless!
